In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Toxteth and the wider Liverpool area, Anthony Asawah, more widely known by his alias Tony Showers, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of young girls. The sentencing took place at Liverpool Crown Court, where the details of his disturbing offenses were laid bare, revealing a pattern of cruelty and predatory behavior spanning over a decade.

Anthony Asawah, now aged 67, was found guilty of multiple charges, including the rape of a 12-year-old girl and the sexual assault of two other minors aged between four and seven. The court heard how Asawah systematically targeted these vulnerable children over a period of 14 years, subjecting them to a catalogue of brutal and sadistic acts. Among the most shocking incidents was his forcing a four-year-old girl to strip and then sending her outside into the freezing cold weather. He also inflicted physical harm by placing a handkerchief or pillow over her nose and mouth, and pushing her against a hot gas fire, leaving her with scars and blisters.

The case revealed a pattern of sexual offenses committed against three young girls, all of whom were 12 years old or younger at the time of the abuse. The trauma inflicted by Asawah’s actions had long-lasting effects on his victims, some of whom were driven into prostitution as a result of the emotional and mental scars they carried. The trial involved the victims reliving their ordeals in court, which was a deeply distressing experience for all involved. The court heard victim impact statements from three women, now adults, who described how the abuse had devastated their lives. They spoke of their struggles with trust, relationships, and substance abuse, highlighting the profound and lasting damage caused by Asawah’s actions.

Prosecutor Damian Nolan detailed the extent of Asawah’s crimes, including the rape of a girl when she was just 12, which he held her down on a couch to commit. He also revealed that seven years later, Asawah raped a 19-year-old woman, who subsequently became pregnant and gave birth to a child. The court heard of additional sexual offenses against girls aged between four and seven, further illustrating the extent of Asawah’s predatory behavior.

During the proceedings, members of the public, including friends and relatives of the victims, filled the courtroom gallery, many of whom were visibly distressed and tearful as the details of the abuse were read aloud. Judge David Harris described Asawah’s crimes as “callous, brutal and sadistic,” condemning his actions as driven solely by perverted gratification at the expense of defenseless children. The judge emphasized that Asawah’s offenses involved violence of a vicious and degrading nature, compounded by intimidation and coercion, and noted his complete lack of remorse or empathy.

Asawah was sentenced to 17 years for the most serious offenses, including two counts of rape, and received additional sentences ranging from 18 months to nine years for other sexual assaults and acts of child cruelty. Under the terms of his sentence, he is required to serve at least half of his 17-year term before being eligible for release. Furthermore, he will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and is permanently disqualified from working with children in any capacity. He resides on Selborne Close in Toxteth, where he has been closely monitored since his arrest.

A victim, now in her twenties, bravely spoke out about her ordeal, describing Asawah as a “lunatic” and a predator. She recounted her childhood experiences of abuse, which she described as both sadistic and callous, and shared her ongoing struggles with coping mechanisms such as overeating. She expressed relief that Asawah is now behind bars, stating, “I’m pleased because now he can’t hurt any more children.” Her testimony underscored the devastating impact of his crimes and the importance of justice for his victims.
