ANDREW WILLIAMS FROM DARLINGTON SENTENCED TO NINE YEARS FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL ASSAULTS AND FILMING VICTIM IN HER SLEEP
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Darlington, Andrew Williams has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being found guilty of multiple heinous sexual offenses. The incident, which took place in March 2021, involved Williams, a resident of Witton Crescent, Darlington, committing a series of sexual assaults against a woman who was vulnerable due to medication she had taken to aid her sleep.
According to court proceedings, Williams carried out at least seven separate attacks on his sleeping victim.
The assaults were particularly egregious because he recorded himself engaging in these acts, capturing footage on his mobile phone.
The disturbing videos were later discovered, leading to his arrest and subsequent prosecution.
Prosecutor Shaun Dodds outlined the severity of the case, emphasizing the profound impact the abuse had on the victim.
The woman, whose identity remains protected, provided a heartfelt victim impact statement during the trial.
She described her ordeal, stating, “When it first happened and it all came out, I could barely leave the house.
The idea he had been in my house, I couldn’t sleep in the house.” She further explained the lasting trauma she endured, revealing that her fear prevented her from sleeping even with medication, and she was terrified of encountering Williams in public.
Her mental health deteriorated significantly, leading her to isolate herself completely.
“I couldn’t even sleep on my sleeping tablets – I was terrified of bumping into him on the street, so I stayed in a house all the time and ended up losing my job,” she said.
The woman also shared her ongoing struggles with nightmares, night sweats, and constant sickness, which severely affected her daily life.
She recounted how she eventually sold all her belongings after moving away, unable to bear the sight of her former home.
Williams, who pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of assault by penetration, was handed a nine-year prison sentence by Judge Recorder Mark McKone.
The judge highlighted the devastating effects of Williams’ actions on his victim’s mental health, noting her fragile state prior to the assaults.
In addition to his prison sentence, Williams was subjected to an indefinite restraining order designed to prevent him from contacting or approaching his victim.
He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities to protect the community and prevent further harm.
This case underscores the serious consequences of sexual violence and the importance of justice for victims who suffer in silence.
The community of Darlington is left to reflect on the profound impact such crimes have on individuals and their families.
