GOUROCK MAN GUILTY OF ASSAULT AND ABUSIVE BEHAVIOUR TOWARDS WIFE
A JURY has convicted a Gourock man of assaulting his wife and subjecting her to abusive behaviour over several years.
Andrew Newman, 46, stood trial at Greenock Sheriff Court and was charged with assaulting the woman by kicking her on the body and restraining her with his body weight during an incident at their Gourock home in 2017.
He was also charged with behaving threateningly and abusively in 2015, including throwing a plate of food, pushing over a table, and accusing her of infidelity.
Additionally, Newman was prosecuted for shouting, swearing, uttering derogatory remarks, and accusing his wife of theft between April 2019 and September 2023.
He originally faced a domestic abuse charge related to this period, but significant reductions were made prior to his conviction.
Jurors heard evidence from the complainant, friends, family, police, and Newman himself, with witnesses describing seeing the woman distressed and showing a bruise from the 2017 assault.
An audio recording was played where Newman warned the woman she would 'pay for it' if she 'disrespected' him.
Newman denied the assaults, claiming the incident was 'isolated.' The court heard that Newman felt remorse upon hearing his own words in the recording.
The jury found him guilty on all three charges, and his sentencing was deferred for a social work report and assessment.
The case will be called again at Greenock Sheriff Court on September 4.
