A man named Andrew Mackie, aged 47, who assaulted his former girlfriend by kicking and punching her while she was on the ground has been spared jail time.
The court heard that Mackie inflicted cuts, abrasions, extensive bruising, and chipped her tooth during the attack.
The incident occurred after Mackie met with his ex-partner at a Crook pub, and later after a night of drinking, he went to her friend’s house.
Following an argument over a jacket, Mackie caused damage to a window and door.
When his ex-partner tried to calm him, he assaulted her physically.
The court was told that Mackie was extremely damaged due to traumatic childhood experiences in foster care and a care home, which contributed to his behavior.
A psychological report indicated he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and the judge noted he was an 'extremely damaged person.' As part of his sentence, Mackie received a 12-month jail sentence suspended for 12 months, a supervision order, and a three-month mental health order to receive psychological treatment.
Prosecutor Penny Bottomley told the court about the incident, and Mackie admitted to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage, and assaulting a police officer on August 21, 2014.
His sentence also includes a five-year restraining order banning him from contacting the victim or entering within 100 meters of her.
