ANDREW HAMMOND SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN WEYMOUTH AND MELKSHAM
In a case that has shocked the local communities, Andrew Hammond, a 75-year-old resident of Weymouth, has been handed a substantial prison sentence of 15 years after pleading guilty to a series of serious child sexual abuse charges. The offences, which include rape, engaging a child in sexual activities, and causing a young girl to view explicit images, were committed over a period spanning from 2005 to 2008 in Melksham.Hammond’s crimes involved the repeated sexual abuse of a girl who was under the age of ten at the time. The abuse reportedly took place over a two-year period, during which Hammond exploited the vulnerability of his young victim on multiple occasions. The details of the case emerged during a court hearing at Winchester Crown Court, where Hammond admitted to nine counts related to his misconduct.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Karen Haddrell expressed her thoughts on the case, emphasizing the severity of Hammond’s actions. She described the ordeal inflicted upon the young girl as “indescribable,” highlighting the profound impact such abuse can have on a child's life. “The ordeal Hammond subjected her to at a young age when she should have been enjoying her childhood is completely indescribable,” she stated.
DC Haddrell also pointed out that Hammond had groomed his victim, taking advantage of her vulnerability during a critical period of her childhood. She expressed satisfaction that justice has been served, noting, “I am pleased that he will now serve a 15-year prison sentence.”
The case underscores the importance of vigilance and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to protect children from predators. Hammond’s conviction and subsequent imprisonment serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of child abuse and the commitment of authorities to bring offenders to justice.
