BRADFORD MAN ANDREW GARTH CAUGHT IN ONLINE CHILD GROOMING SCAM IN WHITEHAVEN
In a significant crackdown on online child grooming, police have successfully apprehended and sentenced Andrew Garth, a 60-year-old resident of Bradford, following a covert operation targeting individuals attempting to exploit minors through social media and internet platforms.Garth believed he was engaging in a conversation with a 14-year-old girl in Whitehaven, when in fact he was communicating with an undercover police officer.
During their interactions, he engaged in what authorities described as “explicit sexual conversation,” demonstrating a clear intent to pursue a sexual relationship with a minor.
The situation escalated when Garth made arrangements to meet the young girl in person, only to discover that she was an undercover officer posing as a minor.
This revelation led to his immediate arrest and subsequent charges.
Garth admitted to attempting to meet a girl under the age of 16, as well as grooming her for sexual activity, and was charged with two counts of attempting to cause or incite a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity.
Further investigation into his online activity uncovered a pattern of highly sexualized conversations with teenage girls, which prompted authorities to charge him with a total of 17 counts related to attempting to cause or incite sexual activity with minors aged 13 to 15.
Garth pleaded guilty to all these charges, acknowledging his involvement in the criminal conduct.
He was formally sentenced today at a court in Bradford to a prison term of two years and eight months.
Additionally, Garth will be subject to an indefinite sexual offences prevention order, which will impose restrictions on his use of the internet once he is released from prison.
This measure aims to prevent any future attempts at online exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from similar threats.
Following the sentencing, T/Detective Superintendent Rob O’Connor issued a statement emphasizing the importance of such operations.
He stated, “This operation resulted in further enquiries which revealed that Garth had engaged in a number of highly sexualized conversations with teenage girls.
We undertake these operations to protect young people who use the internet and social media.
I hope that Garth’s arrest and sentence acts as a deterrent to those who try to use the internet to engage in illegal sexual activity – we are watching, and we will take action.” Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicions of child sexual exploitation.
