April 2006 Man who groomed girl for sex is jailed A 38-year-old married man who groomed a schoolgirl for sex has been sentenced to three years in jail. Amir Majid befriended the youngster when she was just 13. And during visits to his Bradford home Majid gave her and a girlfriend alcopops and even played a pornographic video for a 14-year-old boy to watch. Prosecutor Andrew Semple described how in 2004 the teenage victim had so much alcohol to drink at Majid’s home that she could not walk properly and was vomiting. When they had first met, Majid, who had no previous sex offences on his record, told the girl he was only 25 and asked her if she had a boyfriend. Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that Majid started having unprotected sex with the teenager whenever they met. Last month he admitted five sample charges of sexual activity with a child covering the period between June 2004 and March last year. The girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, later told police she had not objected or asked him to stop while they were having sex. Although the teenager described her involvement with Majid as “a relationship” in a victim-impact statement read to the court she claimed to have been “under his spell.” Majid, who also admitted a further offence of causing a child to watch a sexual act in respect of the pornographic video, will have to register as a sex offender for life after his release from jail. Judge Geoffrey Kamil also extended his licence supervision period by two years and imposed a sex offenders’ prevention order which bans Majid from having under-16s in his car or having unsupervised contact with youngsters other than his own children. He has also been disqualified from seeking any kind of work which might lead to unsupervised access to children. Majid, of Whinbrel Close, Lower Grange, Bradford, had been due to attend the crown court for his sentence on Monday, but he failed to turn up and he had to be arrested on a warrant. Judge Kamil ordered him to serve an extra two months behind bars for his failure to come to court. He told Majid there were several aggravating features in his case including the large age gap between him and the victim and that fact that no condoms were used during sex. “Apart from anything else not only was there a grave risk of pregnancy that didn’t happen, but you were also placing her at risk of catching some transmitted disease, although that never happened,” said Judge Kamil. “Clearly, in my view, there was an element of grooming because you befriended this young woman and also young friends of hers over a period of time and that resulted in you having sexual intercourse with her.”
