ALYSIA SMEDLEY AND KATIE HICKEN SHOCK WARSOP WITH CHILD SEX OFFENSES
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Warsop, Nottingham Crown Court sentenced two women involved in serious child sex offences. The case, which unfolded in September 2018, revealed the disturbing actions of Alysia Smedley, a 22-year-old woman with a troubling history of sexual misconduct involving minors.Smedley, who was already registered as a sex offender following a suspended sentence handed down in October 2016 for previous sexual activity with a child, appeared before the court to face the consequences of her latest crimes. She pleaded guilty to a total of 12 charges, which included sexual offences committed against three girls under the age of 16, as well as breaching the terms of her existing court orders. The offences spanned a range of criminal behaviors, including child abduction, sexual assault, and multiple instances of sexual activity with minors.
The court heard that Smedley's misconduct extended to keeping a young girl away from her home for over 24 hours at a friend’s residence, despite a Sexual Harm Prevention Order being in place to prevent such contact. This breach demonstrated a blatant disregard for court-imposed restrictions meant to protect vulnerable minors from harm.
Specifically, Smedley admitted to one count of child abduction, one count of sexual assault, four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, and seven counts of breaching her Sexual Harm Prevention Order concerning the five girls involved. Her actions prompted a severe legal response, resulting in a three-year prison sentence. Additionally, she was subjected to a five-year restraining order that prohibits her from contacting three of her victims and from entering Warsop or Church Warsop, the areas where the offences occurred.
Alongside Smedley in court was her co-defendant, Katie Hicken, who also faced serious allegations. Hicken admitted to a single charge of sexual activity with a child and was given a conditional discharge, a lesser penalty reflecting her level of involvement in the case.
The case has left the local community deeply unsettled, highlighting the ongoing issues surrounding child protection and the importance of strict enforcement of court orders designed to safeguard minors. The sentences serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals with a history of offending and the critical need for vigilance in protecting vulnerable children in Warsop and surrounding areas.
