RUNCORN CARE OFFICER ALYSHA FRIEL SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE BOY AT LOCAL CHILDREN'S HOME
In April 2023, a disturbing case emerged involving Alysha Friel, a woman from Runcorn, who was found guilty of engaging in inappropriate and illegal sexual activities with a teenage boy while working at a children’s residential home. The incident has shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about safeguarding and the protection of vulnerable children in care.
Friel, aged 26 and residing in Grangemoor, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court to face sentencing after admitting to multiple charges related to grooming and sexual misconduct involving a minor.
She pleaded guilty to six counts of abusing her position of trust as an adult to engage in sexual activity with a boy aged between 13 and 17, as well as four additional counts of causing or inciting sexual activity with the same age group.
Her actions have been described as a gross violation of her responsibilities and a betrayal of the trust placed in her as a care worker.
Prosecutor Callum Ross provided detailed insights into the case, revealing that the misconduct took place in 2019 when Friel was 23 years old and employed as a residential care officer at the children’s home.
The victim, a boy under state care, was residing at the facility at the time.
According to Ross, the victim disclosed that in 2020, Friel began to flirt with him, which eventually escalated into a series of inappropriate encounters.
Ross explained that the relationship between Friel and the boy involved visits to the cinema and multiple instances of kissing, with the victim believing they were in a romantic relationship.
Over the following months, the pair engaged in sexual activities on several occasions, with text messages exchanged that detailed their encounters, feelings, and Friel’s expressed desire to continue the relationship.
The messages also included disturbing references to Friel “wanting” the victim and the victim admitting he was “addicted” to her.
Further complicating the case, the victim went on holiday with Friel, but upon returning, he expressed his desire to end the relationship and asked her to leave her job.
The victim later confided in another staff member at the children’s home, showing Instagram messages between himself and Friel that confirmed the inappropriate relationship.
The home’s management responded swiftly, calling the police and suspending Friel immediately.
During police interviews, Friel, who is a mother of two, did not deny her involvement and admitted to the sexual activity.
Her actions prompted a thorough investigation, and her case was brought before the court for sentencing.
Judge Robert Trevor-Jones highlighted the severity of the misconduct, emphasizing that Friel, at 23, exploited her position of trust and the vulnerability of her young victim, who was under a full care order and placed in her care.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Trevor-Jones described the relationship as a clear case of corruption, noting that the victim had become infatuated or obsessed with Friel, believing they were in a genuine relationship, which ended when he decided to cut ties.
The judge condemned Friel’s actions as a betrayal of her professional responsibilities and a serious breach of trust, which had a lasting impact on the victim.
Friel was sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and was ordered to complete 35 days of rehabilitation.
Additionally, she was required to perform 100 hours of unpaid community work and pay costs amounting to £300, along with a victim surcharge.
She will also be subject to a notification order, requiring her to inform authorities of her whereabouts and activities for a specified period, reflecting the seriousness of her misconduct and the need for ongoing monitoring.
