ALEXANDER CARRUTHERS ARMED WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES DODGES JAIL IN ARMADALE AND BLACKPOOL

In July 2021, a disturbing case involving Alexander Carruthers, a 55-year-old man from Armadale, came to light after he was caught engaging in online grooming activities and possessing a vast collection of child abuse material. The incident unfolded when Carruthers was targeted in a cross-border operation conducted by a paedophile hunter group known as The Fleetwood Enforcers, working in collaboration with a similar organization based in Scotland.

During the operation, Carruthers was lured into a sexual chat with a decoy profile on Facebook, which was actually managed by an adult member of the hunter group. The decoy was pretending to be a 12-year-old girl, and Carruthers responded to her messages with increasing sexual explicitness. The court heard that Carruthers even sent photographs of himself and provided details of his residence in Denholm Grove, Armadale. These incriminating details, along with his sexual messages, were forwarded to the West Lothian-based group Shattering the Silence.

Subsequently, a member of the group went to confront Carruthers at his home in Armadale, and the encounter was live-streamed on Facebook. During the confrontation, Carruthers admitted to being responsible for grooming the decoy, confirming his involvement when asked if he knew her age. His responses, “Aye,” to both questions, led to immediate police action. The police reviewed the footage and arrested Carruthers later that same night.

Following his arrest, officers obtained permission to search his residence, where they seized computer equipment. The digital devices contained an alarming collection of over 250 videos and numerous images depicting children being sexually abused. The material was categorized into three levels of severity, with 251 videos and nine photographs classified as Category A, the most serious. Additionally, there were 102 videos and five images in Category B, and 108 videos along with 151 images in Category C.

At the court hearing, Carruthers pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to communicate indecently with a child for sexual gratification and for humiliating or distressing a person he believed to be under 13. He admitted to sending sexual messages to the decoy between May 19 and May 31, 2020, and possessing the extensive collection of indecent images from June 1, 2019, to June 3, 2020. The police investigation revealed that he repeatedly called the decoy “beautiful” and discussed physical and sexual contact, including plans for her to visit Scotland.

Prosecutor Kate Irwin detailed that the decoy’s chat with Carruthers began on Facebook and continued on WhatsApp, where he further expressed his sexual interest. The messages became increasingly explicit, with Carruthers discussing potential physical contact and sending photographs of himself. The decoy’s real identity was kept confidential, but her role in the operation was crucial in gathering evidence against him.

The court heard that Carruthers, who uses a wheelchair, was confronted by the group member at his home, and the live-streamed footage was used as evidence. The judge, Sheriff Susan Craig, acknowledged the seriousness of the offences but also noted the potential for rehabilitation. She emphasized that Carruthers’s low risk of reoffending, combined with his willingness to cooperate, could lead to a chance for treatment and reform.

As part of his sentence, Carruthers was electronically tagged with a nine-month home curfew and placed under strict supervision by social workers for three years. He will also be subject to the sex offender notification requirements for the next five years, which prohibit him from being alone with children under 16 and require close monitoring of his internet activity. The court’s decision reflects the gravity of his crimes but also highlights the possibility of rehabilitation for offenders willing to engage with treatment programs.
