FORMER POLICE OFFICER JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT
Northumbria Police has issued an apology to the victim of former police officer Albert Jardine, who sexually assaulted her while he was serving in Newcastle.Jardine was convicted of indecently assaulting the woman on multiple occasions spanning the early 1990s, with evidence showing at least two separate incidents.
The court heard that Jardine would engage in 'lewd and disgusting' behaviour, including grabbing her and thrusting against her, and at one point, throwing water on her blouse to create a wet T-shirt look.
Despite concerns raised at the time, the professional standards department investigated but took no action, and Jardine retired shortly after on medical grounds.
Decades later, the victim, inspired by other cases, reported him again, leading to his conviction by a jury.
Jardine, now aged 79 and living in Millbrook, Felling, was sentenced to eight months in prison suspended for 18 months, and ordered to pay £3,000 in costs.
The judge, Julie Clemitson, emphasized that his behaviour was unacceptable and violated public trust as a police officer.
Northumbria Police acknowledged the failings of the past, praising the victim's bravery and highlighting improvements in handling such cases over the past 30 years.
Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Dodds expressed regret for the initial response and confirmed that significant reforms have been put in place to better support victims and bring offenders to justice.
The case underscores the importance of speaking out against misconduct and ensuring public confidence in law enforcement.
