ALAN PEARSON SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS IN PRISON FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN MIDDLESBROUGH
A man identified as Alan Lee Pearson has been handed a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences and voyeurism involving a child in Middlesbrough. The case, which culminated in a conviction at Teesside Crown Court, highlights the gravity of the crimes committed and the judicial response to protect vulnerable victims.
Pearson’s arrest was initiated in April 2021 after authorities received a report from a third party expressing concerns about a teenage victim.
Cleveland Police promptly responded to the information, which led to a detailed investigation.
During the inquiry, the victim disclosed that Pearson had subjected them to physical and sexual assaults over a period of several years, revealing a pattern of abuse that spanned a significant timeframe.
In the course of the investigation, law enforcement officers and specialists provided support to the victim, ensuring their safety and well-being throughout the process.
As part of the evidence collection, authorities examined various electronic devices belonging to Pearson, uncovering a disturbing collection of indecent images and videos.
These findings formed the basis for multiple charges against him.
By March of the previous year, twelve charges had been formally brought against Pearson, encompassing a range of sexual offences.
Throughout the initial court appearances, Pearson maintained a stance of denial, attempting to shift blame onto the victim for some of the allegations.
Despite his protests, the evidence was compelling enough to secure a conviction after a trial that concluded on May 2.
The court found Pearson guilty of two counts of raping a child under the age of 13, seven counts of sexual assault—six of which were classified as the most serious—along with three counts of voyeurism.
The 42-year-old defendant, who was described as having no fixed address, appeared via video link from HMP Durham, where he had been held on remand.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Recorder Andrew Smith questioned Pearson about his continued denial of the offences.
Paul Abrahams, representing Pearson, confirmed that his client maintained his original position, asserting that Pearson’s stance had not changed.
In delivering the sentence, Recorder Smith emphasized the seriousness of Pearson’s actions, describing him as an offender of particular concern.
The judge noted that Pearson would be required to serve at least two-thirds of his custodial term before being eligible for parole, in accordance with sentencing guidelines.
Referring to a background report prepared for the hearing, the judge stated, “The Probation Service takes the view you pose a high risk of causing serious harm to children.” Consequently, the court sentenced Pearson to 16 years in prison, with an additional extended 12 months on license supervision following his release.
The judge also indicated that unless Pearson’s attitude towards his offending changed, he might face serving longer than the minimum two-thirds of his sentence behind bars.
In addition to the custodial sentence, Pearson will be subject to restrictions under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will be confirmed in the coming days.
He is also required to register as a sex offender for life, a measure aimed at safeguarding the community.
Following the hearing, Detective Sergeant Gemma Leeming of Cleveland Police’s Child Abuse and Vulnerable Adults (CAVA) department expressed her relief at the outcome.
She described the case as a “horrific example of long-term systematic sexual and physical abuse,” emphasizing the victim’s bravery in coming forward.
Sergeant Leeming praised the investigative team’s efforts in gathering evidence and bringing Pearson to justice, noting that the victim’s courage was instrumental throughout the process.
Leeming also conveyed her hope that the sentence would allow the victim and their family to begin the process of healing.
Safeguarding Chief Inspector Matt Murphy-King echoed these sentiments, stating, “I hope this sentence brings comfort to the victim and their family.
It should reassure anyone with concerns for the safety of a child or young person that they can report to Cleveland Police in complete confidence.” He assured the public that all allegations are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly by specially trained officers, with support available for victims and their families during the legal process.
Murphy-King encouraged anyone with concerns to contact Cleveland Police either via the 101 number or through their official website, reaffirming the commitment to community safety and child protection.
