Alan Dykes

Poole Wimborne Sexual Abuser

January 2006 PERVERT JAILED A SHAMED Poole businessman has been jailed for six months for sexually assaulting a schoolgirl . Flamboyant Alan Dykes, 48, who runs Jazzy’s in Shore Road, Sandbanks and the Jazz Caf on Poole Quay was found guilty after two trials at Bournemouth Crown Court. The first jury was unable to decide whether Dykes carried out an indecent assault on a teenage girl. But the second found him guilty and Judge Samuel Wiggs described the impact on his young victim as “extreme”. Married Dykes, who denied the offence, is known for his love of music and classic yachts. Known to many as “The Major”, he owns a 66ft classic yacht, Drumbeat, built in 1957 for famous sailing character Sir Max Aitken. The Jazz Caf hosts top acts from London and is also used by Poole Arts Council for exhibitions. But the court heard Dykes has an £800,000 mortgage on his Wimborne home and business debts of £950,000. He has been placed on the sex offenders register for seven years and will no longer be permitted to be licensee of his businesses. The offence took place last year and Dykes’ victim has spoken out about her ordeal. The girl, who cannot be identified, told the Daily Echo the experience of giving evidence in two trials was frightening. “I was allowed to give evidence through a video link but it was still very difficult. He was very arrogant,” she said. Her mother added: “We are just relieved it is all over. It had a very bad effect on my daughter.” Judge Wiggs told the court he had “never seen a case with such an extreme impact on the victim” and she was also praised by the Crown Prosecution Service. “We applaud and admire the bravery of the victim who was strong enough to attend court on two occasions and give evidence on such a sensitive and personal matter,” said a spokeswoman. She said she hoped the courage of the young witness would encourage other girls and women to tell police if they fall prey to sex offenders and to have faith in the criminal justice system.
