ALAN COPELAND AND SHOCKING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN MANSFIELD

Alan Copeland, a 59-year-old man, was convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl in Mansfield. The abuse began nearly ten years ago, with Copeland coercing and manipulating the girl into engaging in inappropriate acts. Throughout the period of abuse, he repeatedly told her to keep what was happening a secret, instilling fear and confusion in the young victim.

The victim, who was initially unable to comprehend the full extent of the abuse, eventually reached an age where she could understand the gravity of her experiences. As she matured, she confided in her family, revealing the disturbing details of what she had endured. Her disclosure prompted immediate action from law enforcement authorities.

Nottinghamshire Police were promptly notified of the allegations, leading to the arrest of Alan Copeland. Following his arrest, he was taken into custody and subjected to a thorough interview conducted by specialist detectives trained in child abuse cases. During questioning, Copeland vehemently denied the accusations, showing anger and frustration at the allegations brought against him.

Despite his denials, the evidence against him was compelling. He was formally charged with three counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. The case proceeded to a two-day trial at Nottingham Crown Court, where the jury was presented with detailed evidence, including powerful video testimony from the victim herself. The court also learned of two prior convictions against Copeland dating back to the 1990s, which further underscored his history of offending.

On Wednesday, September 5, the jury returned a verdict of guilty on all three counts. As a result, Copeland was sentenced to six years in prison. In addition to his incarceration, he was placed on the sex offenders’ register and subjected to a sexual harm prevention order. These measures are designed to severely restrict his access to minors once he is released, aiming to prevent any further harm.

Detective Constable Gemma Sidebottom, who led the investigation, expressed her thoughts on the case. She stated, “Copeland is an unrepentant sex offender who thought he could abuse an innocent child with impunity, but he clearly hadn’t reckoned on the bravery and determination of his victim. As she grew older, she realised what had happened to her all those years ago was wrong and told someone about what had happened to her.”

She continued, “That is a huge step for anyone to take – let alone for someone who is still a child – so I really am full of admiration for the dignity and resolve she has shown throughout this process. With no physical evidence to rely on, the success of this prosecution really came down to the meticulous details she provided in her evidence and her believability as a witness.”

Concluding her remarks, Detective Sidebottom emphasized the importance of the case, saying, “Thanks to her, Copeland has been exposed as a danger to young girls and will now spend a considerable amount of time in prison. I hope this case provides encouragement to other young people who have been abused in similar ways in the past. We will listen to you, we will investigate, and we will seek criminal charges where we can.”
