The investigation uncovered thousands of indecent images, some of which he took himself, and others that depicted him sexually assaulting a particularly young girl.
These images vividly illustrate the severity of his offenses and the malicious intent behind his actions.
Among the most disturbing findings was a series of photographs showing a different young girl using a toilet, captured without her knowledge.
Further incriminating evidence included recordings of a woman at the Sage music centre, an establishment where Ward was employed, where he had concealed a camera in the ceiling of a toilet.
Additional footage revealed him hiding a camera beneath a cubicle in a changing room to film other women, while recordings of children in a similar setting were also discovered.
Ward’s predatory behavior extended beyond filming; he physically assaulted a young girl, an act that adds an even more sinister dimension to his profile as a criminal.
The impact on his victim and her family was profoundly distressing.
They provided emotional victim impact statements detailing the devastation his actions have wrought.
The girl’s mother expressed her heartbreak, saying, “I can't begin to explain the devastation and damage he has brought to our family.
The emotions we go through include anger, sadness, guilt, and heartbreak.
I’ve not stopped crying since I found out about this.
I feel physically sick wondering how he was able to do this, and if he hurt or scared her.
I was unable to protect her, not knowing she was at risk of harm.
He has shattered our lives.” Her father also spoke candidly about the terrifying and heartbreaking realization of what Ward had done, stating he would carry the guilt of what happened to his “beautiful little girl” for the rest of his life.
The extent of Ward’s violations was further underscored by the discovery that he had downloaded more than 22,000 indecent images of children, ranging in age from six months to 15 years, directly from the internet.
Authorities also unearthed 33 different search terms associated with illicit and illegal material, demonstrating a troubling obsession.
At Newcastle Crown Court, Ward, aged 28 and residing in Milton Square, Gateshead, confessed to multiple charges, including sexual assault, six counts of making indecent images of children, two counts of taking indecent images of a child, possessing extreme pornography, and three counts of voyeurism.
The judge, Recorder Julie Clemitson, sentenced him to four years and four months in prison, along with an extended license period of five years and eight months.
As part of his sentence, Ward is required to register as a sex offender for life and must adhere to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.
Ward’s defense lawyer, Jane Foley, argued that her client had shown remorse and highlighted his intelligence and employment history in finance.
She also mentioned that Ward has been diagnosed with autism, along with other mental health issues including personality disorders, anxiety, and depression.
Despite these factors, the sentencing reflects the gravity of his crimes.
Detective Constable Elizabeth Biggins, who led the investigation, commented on Ward’s reprehensible conduct, commending the resilience and cooperation of the victims’ families.
She emphasized the strength and importance of law enforcement’s efforts in securing justice.
