In a disturbing series of events spanning several years, Adam Hewitt, a man with a troubling history of violence against infants, has been at the center of multiple criminal cases involving severe child abuse.His actions have not only caused devastating injuries to vulnerable children but have also exposed significant failures within social services that were supposed to protect these innocent victims.
Hewitt, who was 25 years old at the time of his most recent sentencing, has a criminal record that dates back to at least 2007.
Originally from Birmingham, he has lived in various locations including Pontefract, Nottingham, and Wakefield, but his most notorious crimes occurred during his time in Birmingham and Bridlington.
His pattern of violence and the subsequent legal proceedings have shocked communities and raised questions about the effectiveness of child protection measures.
The first major incident took place in 2007 when Hewitt was working as a holiday representative.
During this period, he met a young mother in Bridlington, who was just 17 years old at the time.
While caring for her baby, Hewitt violently assaulted the child, an attack that was witnessed by friends and relatives.
Witnesses described how Hewitt threw the baby three meters across a room onto a sofa and even dangled the infant by its leg.
On another occasion, when his girlfriend left him alone with her child to go to the supermarket, Hewitt attacked the baby again, resulting in a complex skull fracture.
The infant was hospitalized for nine days, enduring significant trauma.
As suspicions about Hewitt’s involvement grew, his relationship with the mother ended.
The subsequent investigation revealed a pattern of violent behavior towards infants, leading to Hewitt’s arrest and conviction.
In 2008, Hewitt met another mother of a ten-month-old baby.
Despite noticing marks and a red handprint on the child's face, she initially refused to believe Hewitt was responsible.
However, just four weeks later, Hewitt squeezed and shook the baby, causing severe head injuries, including 11 fractured ribs and a broken leg.
The child required emergency surgery and spent a month in hospital.
Hewitt was sentenced to two years in prison for the first attack and three years for the second, with the sentences to run consecutively.
During his sentencing at Hull Crown Court, Judge Jeremy Baker QC emphasized the danger Hewitt posed to children.
He stated, “I am satisfied you pose significant risk to very young children.
You have a low tolerance level to the behaviour of young children and you lose your temper and you are unsuitable to be left in sole charge.” Following his release, Hewitt’s life continued to be marked by instability and further allegations.
By November 2017, he was residing in Birmingham, but his criminal activities persisted.
In January 2019, Hewitt was reported to be living in Wakefield, indicating a pattern of moving between different locations within the UK.
In 2012, Hewitt’s criminal record was further highlighted when he was convicted of causing serious injuries to two babies in separate incidents.
The court heard that Hewitt’s temper was uncontrollable, and he was considered a danger to young children.
The police and social services faced criticism for their handling of these cases, especially after two senior social workers were dismissed for failing to adequately protect the second child.
The mother of that child expressed her frustration, stating, “For the past three years, I have been led to believe what happened was my fault and I had let my child down.
I think I deserve an apology.
Sacking two people isn’t good enough – they can’t go to work now but my life is ruined.
Guilt isn’t the word for what I feel, it’s something past guilt.” Hewitt’s case remains a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child abuse and the critical importance of effective social services.
His history of violence, combined with the apparent failures of protective agencies, continues to evoke concern and calls for reform to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future.
