Initially, Hart denied any wrongdoing, and his case was delayed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
A trial was held, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict.
As the case was set for a retrial, Hart changed his plea to guilty on a charge of sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 17, specifically for abusing his position of trust as a teacher.
During the sentencing hearing on Friday, May 20, the victim bravely addressed the court, sharing her ongoing struggles with trust issues, anxiety, flashbacks, and nightmares, which she attributed to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Her testimony highlighted the profound impact of Hart’s actions on her mental health and well-being.
The court heard that Hart’s initial response to the girl’s distress was to physically comfort her with a hug, which he claimed was non-sexual.
However, this interaction marked the beginning of a pattern where Hart began to sexualize his relationship with the pupil.
Prosecutor Antonie Muller detailed how Hart called her 'addictive' and 'infectious,' and how he started giving her gifts such as chocolates.

During cross-examination, Hart admitted to touching the girl’s bottom 'unintentionally' and claimed he did not remember kissing her.
The court noted his failure to heed warnings from colleagues and mentors, who had expressed concern about his approach, especially towards female pupils.
Hart’s own police interview revealed a lack of remorse and a failure to fully acknowledge his misconduct.
Judge Avik Mukherjee, presiding over the case, emphasized that any custodial sentence would likely be short due to legal guidelines.
Instead, he opted for a more constructive approach, ordering Hart to complete 30 days of rehabilitation, attend an accredited sexual offending program, and pay £2,500 in costs.
The judge also imposed a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), warning that any breach or further offenses would result in severe consequences.
In his remarks, Judge Mukherjee stated, 'Sending you to custody for a very short period wouldn’t be beneficial to the public.
They need to be protected from you in the future.
With that in mind, I want to make it clear I am not passing what I believe to be a lenient sentence.
I am passing the most constructive disposal in this case.' The court’s decision reflects a focus on rehabilitation and public safety, given the serious nature of Hart’s misconduct.
