MORAY MOTHER ADMITS NEGLECT AFTER INFANT FOUND DEAD WITH COCAINE IN SYSTEM
A mother from Moray, Abigail Sherwin, aged 28, has admitted to neglecting her three-month-old son, Logan Sherwin, who was found dead with cocaine in his system, as per Inverness Sheriff Court reports. The infant’s cause of death was officially recorded as 'sudden death in infancy,' and it was noted that despite the baby's exposure to cocaine, the presence of the drug was not directly linked to the cause of death. Logan’s mother appeared alongside her partner, 32-year-old Sam Scott, at the court. Both pleaded guilty to willfully neglecting Logan by recklessly using drugs in his presence, specifically admitting that they had consumed cocaine the night before Logan’s death. They also acknowledged causing unnecessary suffering to another child by regularly using drugs while in their care. The court was told that Logan’s body was discovered on February 9, 2021, after his mother called emergency services. Police seized two baby bottles which tested positive for cocaine, and urine samples from Sherwin and Scott also tested positive for cocaine and other substances. While Logan's post-mortem showed no injuries, minimal traces of cocaine and its metabolites were found in his urine. The court heard that Sherwin’s urine also tested positive for desmethyldiazepam, cannabinoids, and cocaine, while Scott’s tested positive for cannabinoids, cocaine, and levamisole, a common cocaine adulterant. The case was adjourned as both defendants requested deferral for background reports, with a hearing scheduled for November 6. Their bail was continued pending sentencing.
