ABDUL KHAN SENTENCED TO EIGHT AND A HALF YEARS FOR RAPE IN READING AND FLEEING TO PAKISTAN
In a significant legal case that unfolded in Reading, a man identified as Abdul Khan has been sentenced to a substantial prison term of eight and a half years for the serious crime of rape.The incident involved a teenage girl, and the case drew considerable attention due to Khan’s subsequent flight from the United Kingdom to Pakistan, complicating the pursuit of justice.
Abdul Khan, aged 39 and residing on Chatham Place in Reading, was initially charged in 2021 with the sexual assault of a minor, specifically a teenage girl, with the alleged offense dating back to 2010.
The case remained unresolved for several years until the victim reported the assault to Thames Valley Police in 2019, prompting a police investigation that eventually led to Khan’s arrest and prosecution.
The trial against Khan was scheduled to take place in December 2022 at Reading Crown Court.
However, prior to the proceedings, Khan was granted bail, which allowed him to leave the country.
Seizing the opportunity, Khan fled the UK and traveled to Pakistan, evading the court’s jurisdiction.
As a result, the trial was postponed and rescheduled for July of the following year, with the court proceeding in his absence.
During the three-day trial held in July, the jury deliberated thoroughly and ultimately reached a unanimous verdict of guilt against Khan.
Despite his absence, the court proceeded with the case, and the judge sentenced him to eight and a half years in prison for his crimes.
The case highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in pursuing justice across international borders, especially when defendants choose to flee the country to avoid prosecution.
