GLEN CHURCHILL FROM AYLESBURY AND READING JAILED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ASSAULT AND OBSCENE IMAGES
In a case that has shocked the communities of Aylesbury and Reading, Glen Churchill, a 45-year-old former postal worker, has been sentenced to prison after admitting to the sexual assault of a five-year-old girl. The incident occurred on March 30, 2013, while Churchill was residing in Reading, and the case has since garnered significant media attention due to the disturbing nature of the crimes involved.According to court proceedings at Reading Crown Court, the young girl’s mother noticed a change in her daughter’s behavior, observing that she had become unusually withdrawn and reserved. When questioned, the child revealed that Churchill had touched her inappropriately. During police interviews, the girl disclosed that Churchill had assaulted her on five separate occasions within a single evening, a revelation that deeply distressed her family and the community alike.
Detectives investigating the case uncovered a troubling collection of digital material on Churchill’s computer. A forensic examination revealed hundreds of indecent images and videos depicting children in various states of undress and engaging in sexual activities. The images were classified across multiple levels of severity, with 71 photos and three videos categorized at the highest level, level five. Additionally, there were 457 images and 90 videos at level four, 817 images and 39 videos at level three, 93 images and 21 videos at level two, and 180 images along with 20 videos at level one. The police officer who reviewed these materials stated that most of the images featured children under the age of seven, with some as young as one year old, highlighting the disturbing nature of the content.
During the court hearing, Churchill’s defense attorney, Lisa Bald, emphasized that this was Churchill’s first encounter with the law. She pointed out that a medical examination of the young girl found no physical injuries and that there was no evidence to suggest that Churchill had premeditated the assault. Ms. Bald argued that the sentence should allow Churchill to receive appropriate treatment, noting his candor during police interviews and his expressed remorse, stating, “He has been extremely candid, particularly in explaining the assault and in particular how disgusted he is with himself.”
Regarding the possession of the obscene images, Ms. Bald explained that Churchill had been employed as a postal worker for 25 years, maintaining a previously unblemished work record. She suggested that his recent unemployment and the escalation of his behavior were factors that contributed to his actions. She also highlighted the devastating impact on his family, who had been forced to relocate due to the stigma associated with his crimes, asserting, “He has ruined his family’s life. They have had to move. The stigma is going to follow them around and it’s all his fault.”
Judge Zoe Smith delivered the sentencing, acknowledging Churchill’s previous good character and his career in the postal service. She expressed understanding of the profound effect the case had on his family but emphasized the severity of his crimes. Churchill was sentenced to a total of two years in prison for sexual assault, twelve months for possession of indecent images of children, and two months for possessing prohibited images, with all sentences to run consecutively. Additionally, he received a three-month sentence for possessing extreme pornographic images, which was to run concurrently. Churchill was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities in the future.
Churchill, who resides on Rainborough Gardens in Aylesbury, now faces the consequences of his actions, which have left a lasting scar on the victims and their families, as well as on the communities of Aylesbury and Reading.
