ABDUL HASIB ELAHI SENTENCED IN BIRMINGHAM FOR ORGY OF ONLINE CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES

A profoundly disturbing case has culminated in Abdul Hasib Elahi, 26, being sentenced to 32 years behind bars for orchestrating one of the most heinous online sexual abuse and blackmail schemes ever investigated by the National Crime Agency.

Elahi, from Sparkhill, Birmingham, targeted nearly 2,000 victims worldwide, primarily through fake identities as a stockbroker or affluent businessman on sugar daddy websites, promising money in exchange for explicit images.

He deliberately chose vulnerable victims, including those in debt or too young to be legitimately on the sites, and manipulated them into sending photographs.

Elahi also used social media platforms to find victims.

To further deceive, he sent fake bank transaction screenshots indicating money had been transferred from his account, then swiftly directed victims to encrypted messaging app WhatsApp to avoid detection.

Once he accumulated a large collection of explicit images, Elahi used blackmail tactics, threatening to reveal the content to victims’ families and friends unless they sent progressively more depraved images and videos.

His criminal activities included forcing victims to self-harm, coercing women to produce footage of child abuse, and compelling young girls to abuse their own siblings.

Many victims, overwhelmed by fear, felt they had no choice but to comply.

The National Crime Agency’s inquiry uncovered at least 196 victims in the UK, with Elahi reaching out to approximately 600 individuals within the country.

Internationally, he attempted contact with 1,367 women in the United States, and there were victims across 20 other nations including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

The NCA collaborated with global partners to protect those targeted.

Elahi systematically uploaded and stored all collected abuse material across cloud storage sites, then sold ‘box sets’ of content via the cloud and the encrypted messaging app Telegram, earning over £25,000.

This sale caused additional suffering, as victims’ families learned of the abuse, and more offenders attempted to blackmail the victims again.

Unemployed at the time, Elahi admitted to 158 charges—committed between January 1, 2017, and August 7, 2020—in separate hearings at Birmingham Crown Court.

The charges encompassed multiple counts of blackmail, distributing private sexual images, creating and distributing indecent images of children—including infants, encouraging sexual assault of children, sexually assaulting a boy, and possessing over 65,000 indecent images of children.

The indictment involved 72 victims aged from just eight months old to adults.

Elahi was arrested on December 19, 2018, after police received a report that he was blackmailing a 15-year-old girl in America.

Authorities seized and examined his mobile and computer devices, leading to charges by the Crown Prosecution Service and his remand in custody in August 2020.

During today’s sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court, victim-impact statements revealed the profound and long-lasting trauma inflicted.

One young survivor, a schoolgirl at the time, described her attempt to overdose after discovering her images had been shared on Twitter: “I still think about these incidents often which makes me sad.

For two years, this person has ruined my life.

I was heartbroken.

I remember my 16th birthday, I spent the night crying.

I had to pick up the pieces of my life and put them back together.

I am trying to move on but I find it very hard, I feel that this will be with me for the rest of my life.” Another teen expressed relief at Elahi’s arrest, but also horror, stating: “Knowing that this cancerous polyp of a human being has been caught gives me great relief.

I am however shaken to my soul and completely horrified that I was part of this.

I have a feeling of dread that I can’t even describe and it will never leave me.” A different victim disclosed her suicidal thoughts and current anxiety, saying: “I wish this had never happened to me.

I hope I can put this behind me and get on with the rest of my life.” Tony Cook, Head of CSA Operations at the NCA, condemned Elahi’s actions: “Elahi is a depraved sadist who gained sexual gratification from exerting power and control over his victims, many of whom he goaded to the point of wanting to kill themselves.

He has wrecked lives and families.

The NCA investigators were horrified by what Elahi did and stunned by the scale of his offending across the world.

The effects on victims will last throughout their lives.

I commend their bravery and urge anyone being abused online to report it.

Help is available.

Many offenders like Elahi mask their true identities behind convincing personas to exploit children and adults alike.

Parents must speak with their children about online safety.” The investigation prompted further inquiries into Elahi’s associates, resulting in several other convictions.

Sophie Mortimer of the Revenge Porn Helpline commented: “This is a long-awaited day for Elahi’s many victims.

We’ve worked for two and a half years and have removed 135,000 images, achieving a 90% removal rate.

We hope victims find some closure today.

We will continue to report and remove such content, encouraging anyone concerned about their images to contact us for support.” Additionally, Kirsty Nicholls, 36, of Northolt, Middlesex, who knew Elahi via a sugar daddy website and admitted to involvement in two sexual assaults against a child as well as making indecent images, was sentenced to six years and nine months.
