POLICE OFFICER AVOIDS JAIL AFTER DOWNLOADING HUNDREDS OF IMAGES OF CHILDREN OVER A DECADE

A former officer, now disgraced, who downloaded nearly 100 images depicting child abuse has escaped imprisonment.

Stephen Taylor, 37, was taken into custody by Essex Police following a search of his home in South Ockendon, where investigators found a significant number of illicit images stored on his electronic devices.

Previously serving as a constable with the Metropolitan Police in Wandsworth, Taylor accepted his guilt through a written statement before being charged with nine criminal offences in December.

He admitted to six charges of creating indecent images of children and three of possessing extreme pornography during a court appearance at Basildon Crown Court on March 23, 2018.

Officers executed a warrant based on intelligence gathered and confiscated laptops, hard drives, mobile phones, and cameras from his residence on October 15 last year.

Analyses of these devices uncovered 109 videos and images, including 21 categorised as Category A, indicating the gravest forms of abuse imagery.

Taylor was also issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order valid for five years.

Post-sentencing, Detective Inspector Ashley Howard highlighted the importance of safeguarding children, stating such crimes involve repeated exploitation each time the images are viewed or shared.

He reaffirmed law enforcement’s commitment to hunting down those involved in child exploitation and warned offenders that police would act swiftly.

Furthermore, Taylor was dismissed from his position as a Metropolitan Police officer without notice, following a misconduct hearing at the end of February that classified his actions as gross misconduct.

He is part of a broader initiative in which over 58 offenders have been arrested during a crackdown on the online production and distribution of child abuse images.

This effort, led by specialised police teams working in tandem with Essex Police’s online and child abuse investigation units, aims to combat these perverted crimes.

Police Constable Clair Ward, who led the investigation, stated that Taylor’s possession of nearly 100 child abuse images demonstrates a grave breach of trust, and assured the public that authorities will continue to target such offenders relentlessly.
