YVONNE MAIRS FROM WARRINGTON CONVICTED FOR NEGLECTING SICK DOG SASH A

Yvonne Mairs, a resident of Sinclair Avenue in Orford, Warrington, was found guilty of neglecting her dog, Sasha, a situation that ultimately led to the animal's suffering and death. Born on December 4, 1967, Mairs was convicted in connection with her failure to seek urgent veterinary care for her ailing pet, despite clear signs of severe illness.

On June 4, 2019, Mairs contacted the RSPCA, claiming that her dog was unwell. When inspectors arrived at her home in Warrington, they were shown Sasha, who appeared to be in a dire state. The dog was notably quiet and lethargic, underweight, and suffering from multiple infections. The inspectors observed discharge and blood dripping from Sasha’s ears, along with numerous missing and loose teeth. The dog's skin was covered in scabs, and a strong, foul smell emanated from infected areas, indicating a prolonged period of suffering.

During the court proceedings, Anna McDonald, the prosecutor, detailed the condition of Sasha. A veterinarian examined the dog and confirmed that Sasha was in significant pain. The vet noted that Sasha would yelp whenever her face was touched, a clear sign of distress. Due to the severity of her condition, the veterinarian recommended euthanasia, as surgery was deemed too risky and would not have alleviated her suffering effectively.

It was revealed that Sasha had been suffering for at least six weeks, possibly many months, before her condition was recognized. However, Mairs claimed she only became aware of the full extent of her dog’s illnesses in the week prior to calling the RSPCA. She explained that her own struggles with anxiety made it difficult for her to leave the house and transport Sasha to a vet. Despite her difficulties, she had been attempting to clean Sasha’s head with a cloth in an effort to provide some relief.

The court heard that Mairs had owned Sasha for her entire life and that there was no prior evidence of neglect. Her lawyer emphasized her long-term ownership and suggested that neglect had not been an issue before. Nonetheless, the court found her responsible for the suffering inflicted upon Sasha.

As part of her sentence, Mairs received a 12-week prison sentence, which was suspended for 12 months. Additionally, she was banned from keeping any animals for the rest of her life, a measure intended to prevent any future neglect or abuse. The case highlights the importance of timely veterinary care and the responsibilities of pet owners in Warrington and beyond.
