YUSAF MOHAMMED SENTENCED FOR MANSLAUGHTER IN NEWARK TRAGEDY

Yusaf Mohammed, a 66-year-old resident of Newark, has been found guilty and subsequently sentenced to a prison term of nine years and four months for the crime of manslaughter by diminished responsibility. The devastating incident took place at the couple’s shared residence in Newark on August 16, 2017, marking a tragic chapter in the community’s history.

According to court reports, the victim, Karen Jacquet, aged 59, returned home that day to find her partner in a distressed state. In an attempt to offer comfort, she reached out and touched his arm, unaware of the violent outburst that was about to unfold. Mohammed, in a moment of uncontrollable rage, attacked her with a rolling pin and a large kitchen knife, inflicting fatal injuries. Despite the swift response of emergency services, including police and paramedics, who performed CPR at the scene, Karen Jacquet was pronounced dead shortly after the attack.

In a chilling development, Mohammed himself contacted the police at 5:12 pm that same day, confessing to the killing in a calm manner. This act of calling the authorities and admitting to the crime was a significant element in the subsequent legal proceedings.

During the court hearings, it was revealed that the couple had shared a long-standing relationship spanning three decades. They had also been involved in fostering children, highlighting the depth of their personal history and the tragedy’s impact on their family and community.

Mohammed entered a guilty plea to manslaughter by diminished responsibility, a plea that acknowledged his mental state at the time of the incident. The court, recognizing that his mental capacity was impaired but not entirely absent, sentenced him accordingly. The sentencing was carried out at Nottingham Crown Court, which took into account the mental health considerations that mitigated his level of responsibility.

In response to the case, Nottinghamshire Police issued a statement expressing their condolences to the victim’s family. Detective Inspector Justine Wilson commented on the tragic nature of the event, stating: “Mohammed’s actions on that tragic day resulted in the senseless and unnecessary death of a defenceless woman. Our thoughts are with her family and friends who have had to deal with this terrible loss, and I would like to praise them all for their patience and understanding throughout the investigation and court process.”
