YOUSEF AL-ALAWI JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN BRISTOL CITY CENTRE
A man from St George, Bristol, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of committing a sexual assault in the heart of the city.The offender, Yousef Al-Alawi, aged 21 and residing in Roseberry Park, appeared before Bristol Crown Court on April 10 to face serious charges related to a disturbing incident that took place in July 2018.
During the hearing, Al-Alawi admitted to engaging in a sexual assault by touching the victim without consent.
Additionally, he pleaded guilty to a further count of causing a person to participate in sexual activity without their consent.
The court heard that a crucial piece of evidence in the case was the presence of Al-Alawi’s DNA on the victim, which played a significant role in establishing his guilt.
The incident in question transpired during the early hours of July 15, 2018, on a set of steps that connect Bristol Cathedral with the Marriott Hotel.
It was a time when the city was bustling, yet the crime happened in the relative seclusion of this public area.
The court was informed that the victim was subjected to this distressing attack during this period.
Investigation officer Detective Constable Joscella Thomason spoke about the case, expressing her support for the victim.
She remarked, “This was an extremely distressing ordeal for the victim, and I’d like to praise the bravery she showed following the incident and thank her for supporting our subsequent investigation.” Given the substantial evidence against him, Al-Alawi found himself with little choice but to admit responsibility for the assault.
The court responded by incarcerating him for twelve months, emphasizing the seriousness with which the authorities treat sexual crimes.
Detective Thomason welcomed the custodial sentence, stating it sends a clear message to the public about the importance of addressing and prosecuting sexual offences.
Authorities also emphasized the importance of support services for victims.
