January 2020 North Staffordshire paedophile who brutally raped schoolgirl to spend longer in jail A paedophile who brutally raped a schoolgirl will spend longer behind bars following the intervention of a top judge. Yadwinder Singh sexually assaulted the youngster by kissing and touching her. When the victim cried and fought back, Singh would pinch her and pull her hair to keep her from crying out for help. The abuse escalated to the point where Singh pushed her on a bed, took her clothes off, and raped her. The defendant, of The Avenue, Basford, was jailed for five years and six months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court last year. But Singh, aged 26, has now been handed a longer sentence after the Attorney General, The Rt Hon Geoffrey Cox QC MP, stepped in this week. The Court of Appeal has now increased his term to seven years and six months in jail after the original sentence was described as ‘unduly lenient’. After the hearing, the Attorney General said: “The actions of the offender will have long lasting effects on the victim who was young and vulnerable at the time of the offence. “I am pleased to see a longer sentence imposed that reflects the harm carried out by the offender.” Singh was found guilty of rape and three charges of sexual activity with a child following a trial last October. Prosecutor Jonathan Dickinson said Singh initially touched the girl inappropriately before raping her. He added: “He took his chance when it arrived having already groomed the girl.” Singh will also be on the Sex Offenders’ Register for the rest of his life. October 2019 ‘I can’t move on with my life…’ – Rape victim speaks out as this Stoke-on-Trent sex beast is jailed A rape victim has told how she cannot move on with her life after being attacked by a sex beast. The teenager – who cannot be named for legal reasons – sent a passionate statement to Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court detailing how the assault left her feeling and the impact it has had on her life. It comes as her attacker – 26-year-old Yadwinder Singh – has now been jailed for five years and five months after being found guilty of rape and three charges of sexual activity with a child. In a statement read out in court, his victim said: “Ever since it happened, I have felt like I was no longer myself, I was playing the girl who I used to be before any of this started. “I was incapable of seeing people. I could not open up or trust anybody. I could not go to my friends and I worried that people would see me differently – they would just see an abused girl. “I thought it would be better if I was the only one in pain. Then no-one would treat me differently and I would spend most nights trying to get past it. “I felt empty, I was no longer capable of feeling positive. “When it came out, everything I feared came true and people were jumping on me and saying I should have fought and tried harder to stop it. I didn’t want to hear that from anyone. “It was hard to handle once everyone knew. I had to try not to break down. “I still struggle to talk about it. It is unfortunate that I cannot move on with my life.” The court heard Singh, of The Avenue, Basford, initially touched the girl inappropriately before raping her. Prosecutor Jonathan Dickinson said: “He took his chance when it arrived having already groomed the girl.” Singh broke down in court as Judge Dean Kershaw prepared to deliver the sentence. Judge Kershaw told him: “You pushed her on a bed, took her clothes off, and raped her. You tried to tell her girls do that kind of thing. “I have heard her give evidence and heard her statement – it is clear that young lady is hurting inside.” As well as the prison sentence, Singh will be on the Sex Offenders’ Register for the rest of his life. He was also handed a 10-year restraining order preventing him from contacting his victim.
