BRISTOL CHURCH MINISTER WILMER STAPLETON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING BOYS

In January 2015, Wilmer Stapleton, a church minister based in Bristol, was found guilty of serious sexual misconduct involving a young boy and was subsequently sentenced to prison.

Stapleton, who is openly gay and serves as a minister at three Moravian churches in Bristol, faced multiple charges related to his inappropriate conduct and possession of indecent images of minors.

Stapleton, known as 'Tom,' had previously admitted to possessing over 22,000 images and video clips depicting boys aged between eight and sixteen.

Despite this, he denied five counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, asserting that any such activity only occurred after the boy had turned 16.

However, the jury at Bristol Crown Court was convinced otherwise, convicting him of four counts of sexual activity with the boy between April 2007 and April 2009, indicating that the victim was younger during those incidents.

On the day of sentencing, the 61-year-old defendant, residing on New Cheltenham Road in Kingswood, was sentenced to five years in prison by Recorder Ignatius Hughes QC.

The judge emphasized the gravity of Stapleton’s actions, stating, “For a man of your age and in your position to engage in sexual conduct with a child was not only very morally wrong it was very criminally wrong.” The court also noted elements of grooming, suggesting a calculated approach to the victim’s exploitation.

While acknowledging Stapleton’s remorse and good character, the judge pointed out that these factors did not mitigate the severity of his crimes.

“Your mitigation is that you were of good character and I accept that, in your own way, you have been remorseful for what happened,” he said.

“Unfortunately, your remorse did not translate into guilty pleas.” During the trial, Stapleton claimed that although he met the alleged victim when he was 12 and had come out as gay, they did not engage in any sexual activity while the boy was underage.

Evidence presented included a framed naked photograph of the boy kept in Stapleton’s bedside cabinet, as well as a video clip of another naked young person.

Stapleton, who was born in Florida, explained that he was married with a daughter and living in the United States when he publicly came out as gay at age 41.

He divorced in 2000 and later moved to the UK, where he was invited to serve as a minister for the Moravian Church, working across three churches in Bristol.

Stapleton described the relationship with the boy as familial, stating that the boy would visit his home, where they would chat and watch television.

He claimed to have obtained parental consent for these visits and that the boy occasionally stayed overnight in a guest room.

“I saw him as a little brother – or more like the son that I never had,” Stapleton said.

“He talked about puberty, boys and girls.

He was completely comfortable about his being gay, within himself.” Regarding the possession of indecent images, Stapleton admitted to downloading such material but insisted it was not driven by sexual attraction.

He explained, “The images were more to do with my unhappiness with being fat all my life.

Aged eight to ten I put on weight and I’ve been teased all my life.

The images were almost exclusively skinny men.

It is the skinniness that attracted me; it’s what I wished I looked like.” He also acknowledged having sexual encounters with the boy after he turned 16, describing these as a “blip” that happened no more than three times.

Nonetheless, the jury found him guilty of engaging in sexual activity with the boy between the ages of 14 and 16 on four separate occasions.

The court’s decision resulted in a five-year prison sentence, along with requirements to register as a sex offender and a five-year sexual offences prevention order.

Defense counsel Paul Grumbar argued that Stapleton was “not a sexual predator but a victim of his position,” requesting a minimal sentence as Stapleton was expected to return to the United States upon release.

The case continues to draw attention due to the serious nature of the allegations and the implications for the community and the church involved.
