WILLIAM WALLS FROM COWDENBEATH SENTENCED AGAIN FOR STALKING AND RESTRICTED FOR 100 YEARS IN SCOTLAND

In a recent development in the ongoing legal saga surrounding William Walls, a man with a deeply troubling criminal history from Cowdenbeath, he has been subjected to a new sentence that underscores the severity of his actions and the measures taken to protect potential victims.

Walls, who has previously been convicted of heinous crimes including the rape of two young girls, was once again brought before Dunfermline Sheriff Court in May 2021. During this hearing, he faced charges related to stalking, a serious offense that prompted the court to impose an 11-month prison sentence. However, what makes this case particularly notable is the court's decision to issue a non-harassment order that extends for an unprecedented length of time—100 years—effectively barring Walls from approaching the two women involved or entering their neighborhoods for the remainder of his life.

This non-harassment order is believed to be among the longest ever issued in Scotland, reflecting the court's intent to prevent any future contact or harassment by Walls. The order's scope indicates the gravity of the threat perceived by the judiciary and the importance placed on safeguarding the victims' well-being.

William Walls, now 51 years old, was released from prison in November 2020 after serving three years of a seven-year sentence handed down by the High Court of Glasgow in 2017. His previous conviction stemmed from a series of disturbing crimes committed between 1981 and 1987, involving the sexual assault and rape of two young girls aged between four and twelve. Walls' predatory behavior was documented to have taken place across various locations, including a tree house and an abandoned structure, where he assaulted his victims multiple times.

During the 2017 trial, Walls was found guilty of multiple counts of rape and sexual abuse. His defense, led by solicitor advocate Gordon Martin, attempted to contextualize Walls' behavior by citing childhood issues that allegedly affected his social boundaries. Despite this, the court recognized the severity of his crimes and the betrayal of trust involved, especially considering the vulnerability of his young victims.

Judge Lord Beckett emphasized the gravity of Walls' actions, highlighting the profound impact on the victims' lives and the importance of stringent measures to prevent any recurrence. The case drew significant attention to the issue of non-recent child abuse and the justice system's commitment to addressing such crimes, regardless of the time elapsed since they occurred.

Detective Inspector June Peebles of the Non-Recent Child Abuse Investigations Team in Fife expressed her support for the victims and the importance of the court's decision. She noted that Walls' behavior had a lasting and damaging effect on his victims and praised their bravery in coming forward despite the passage of many years. Peebles also reaffirmed Police Scotland's dedication to investigating all reports of sexual abuse, emphasizing the specialized units that handle non-recent cases and the importance of holding offenders accountable, no matter how much time has passed.
