ANGELA TAYLOR AND PAUL CANNON CONVICTED OF MURDER IN HITCHIN, HERTFORDSHIRE
In a tragic case that shocked the community of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, William Taylor, a well-known and affluent farmer, was found dead in a river near his property in February. The circumstances surrounding his death led to a high-profile trial that culminated in the conviction of his wife, Angela Taylor, and her partner, Paul Cannon, for his murder.Details emerged during the court proceedings revealing a deep-seated animosity between William Taylor and the accused couple. It was disclosed that Angela Taylor and Paul Cannon had been involved romantically since July 2017, a relationship marked by intense hostility towards William Taylor. The court heard that the two had exchanged messages via WhatsApp, in which they discussed violent fantasies about killing William, indicating premeditation and a shared desire to eliminate him.
The investigation uncovered that William Taylor’s body was discovered lying in waist-deep mud along a riverbank, close to his farm. Forensic analysis suggested that he had suffered a possible fracture to the hyoid bone in his neck, a sign that strangulation or suffocation might have been involved in his death. The judge noted that only the accused and possibly an unknown accomplice could have knowledge of the actual events leading to William’s demise. Evidence pointed to an attack that took place in or near his farmyard, implying that the murder was not a random act but a targeted assault.
Although Angela Taylor was not physically present at the scene of the crime, the court described her as the “driving force” behind the murder. Her role was characterized as one of significant influence, motivating the actions of Paul Cannon. The court’s findings highlighted a complex web of toxic relationships, driven by jealousy, greed over valuable properties and farmland worth millions, and longstanding family disputes. These factors contributed to the intense emotional and financial motives that underpinned the crime.
Sentencing was handed down with each of the convicted receiving a minimum term of 22 years in prison. Paul Cannon was also convicted of arson, for which he was sentenced to an additional two years, to run concurrently with his murder sentence. The case underscored the destructive power of greed and hatred, which ultimately led to William Taylor’s tragic death.
Detective Chief Inspector Carl Foster expressed hope that the lengthy sentences would bring some measure of peace to William Taylor’s family. He acknowledged the dignity and resilience shown by the family throughout the legal process, despite the pain and loss they endured. The case remains a stark reminder of how personal vendettas and greed can escalate into deadly violence, leaving a community to mourn and seek justice.
