WILLIAM TABBERRER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN SPONDON AND DERBY

In April 2010, a 71-year-old man named William Tabberer was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing three young girls over a span of three decades. The court heard that Tabberer, who resides on Langley Road in Spondon, admitted to committing a total of 12 separate offences related to indecent assault and indecency with a minor.

During the proceedings at Derby Crown Court, it was revealed that one of his victims was only five years old when he indecently touched her and performed a sexual act in her presence. The same girl was subjected to further abuse until she was 14, with the last incident occurring when she was a teenager. She was the first to report the abuse to the police, which prompted other victims to come forward and share their experiences.

The court was told that this young woman felt as though her innocence had been stolen from her, a sentiment that underscored the profound impact of Tabberer’s actions. Judge Robert Brown, presiding over the case, sentenced him to four and a half years in prison, emphasizing the severity of his crimes by stating, “You defiled them. You abused them. You caused them serious harm.”

Prosecutor Julia King provided insight into the lasting effects of the abuse on the victims. She explained that the first victim, who had blocked out many memories of her childhood, now struggles with trust issues and often perceives kindness from others as having an ulterior motive. Her difficulty trusting people is a direct consequence of the trauma inflicted by Tabberer.

Another victim, who was indecently assaulted by Tabberer between the ages of six and 18, also suffers from trust issues, particularly with men. Miss King further detailed that a third girl, who was abused on three separate occasions when she was around nine or ten years old, has been deeply affected, describing herself as someone who has been upset frequently and who finds it hard to open up to others.

William Tabberer, who was charged with ten counts of indecent assault between 1971 and 2001 and two counts of indecency with a child between 1980 and 1982, pleaded guilty to all charges. His defense lawyer, Christopher Lowe, acknowledged his client’s remorse and acceptance of his actions. Lowe stated, “He fully appreciates his behaviour has been despicable over the years and at the age of 71 finds himself for the first time sitting in the dock of the crown court. It is something of a relief that it came to the knowledge of the authorities. He now sits in court absolutely racked with remorse.”

As part of his sentence, Tabberer is subject to a sexual offenders prevention order, which prohibits him from entering the premises of schools or nurseries. Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender and is banned from working with children in any capacity. These measures aim to prevent any further harm and ensure public safety in the community of Spondon and beyond.
