WILLIAM STEWART AND SHOCKING RAPE IN PLYMOUTH

A naval serviceman named William Stewart has been convicted of serious sexual offenses following an incident that occurred during a night of heavy drinking and celebration involving members of the Royal Navy in Plymouth.

The events unfolded after a group of sailors, including Stewart and a female colleague, had been out together to mark her birthday.

The night was characterized by revelry, with alcohol flowing freely and a lively atmosphere that culminated in a gathering at a Holiday Inn in Bulford.

According to court proceedings, the sailors engaged in a 'naked mess' party, a term used to describe a casual, topless gathering where participants often spray each other with drinks.

During the celebration, several sailors removed their shirts, and someone shouted 'naked mess,' prompting the group to strip down further.

The female sailor, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, recounted that she was given a bottle of prosecco, which she poured over herself and onto some of her male colleagues who were also shirtless and on the floor.

She described the scene as lively and carefree, with some participants lying on the floor and others standing with the bottle of prosecco in hand.

At some point, the woman went with William Stewart to another room to change.

She later testified that she woke up to find Stewart, a 26-year-old engineering technician, engaging in inappropriate behavior.

She described waking to Stewart fondling her breasts, an act that left her feeling scared and confused.

She further stated that Stewart then moved to the other side of the bed and sexually assaulted a male sailor who was also asleep in the same room.

The court heard that Stewart's actions did not end there.

After the initial assault, he returned to the woman's side of the bed and continued to sexually violate her.

The victim emphasized that she was in a state of shock and distress, and she was unable to recall all details clearly.

She also described the incident as occurring during a night out while their ship was undergoing maintenance in Plymouth, which added context to the setting of the events.

Prosecutor Wing Commander Michael Saunders highlighted that Stewart had recently joined the ship and that alcohol consumption was significant during the night.

He pointed out that the videos from the conference room showed the victim pouring prosecco over herself and others, including Stewart, indicating a party atmosphere.

During the court proceedings, the female sailor testified that the night was meant to be a celebration of her birthday and some promotions within the crew.

She recounted that everyone was having a good time, with drinks and pizza, until the 'naked mess' shout and subsequent stripping.

She described herself as being somewhat intoxicated, with alcohol splashed on her and others.

William Stewart, however, claimed that all sexual activities with the sailors were consensual and initiated by the others involved.

Despite his assertions, the court found him guilty of multiple charges, including rape, assault, and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent.

The sentencing for Stewart is scheduled to take place later this month, as the court prepares to deliver its judgment.

This case underscores the serious consequences of misconduct and the importance of accountability within military ranks, especially in environments where alcohol and camaraderie can sometimes blur the lines of appropriate behavior.
