WILLIAM MCCALLUM SHOCKS MOTHERWELL AND INVERARAY WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG GIRLS
In May 2018, a disturbing case unfolded involving William McCallum, a 55-year-old man originally from East Kilbride but residing in Motherwell, who was found guilty of sexually assaulting two young girls. The incident took place near Inveraray, where both families maintained caravans, and the case was brought before Dunoon Sheriff Court.According to court records and the testimony presented, McCallum lured the two girls, who were sisters, on separate excursions aboard his quad bike through the forested areas close to their families' caravans. One of the girls, who was only 11 years old at the time of the assault in 2015, described how McCallum, whom she referred to as a 'family friend,' subjected her to molestation by placing his hands inside her leggings. The other girl also testified about her experience, which involved similar misconduct.
The court heard that McCallum's actions were not isolated but part of a pattern of predatory behavior. The girls' accounts were detailed and consistent, leading to his conviction despite his initial plea of not guilty. During the sentencing hearing, Sheriff Ward emphasized the gravity of the crimes, stating, "These are serious matters. You pled not guilty and went to trial. You were convicted because I believed what the girls said. Any involvement with a girl of that age is serious."
As part of his sentence, William McCallum was ordered to complete 240 hours of community service. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of five years, reflecting the court's concern over his potential risk to the community and the need for ongoing monitoring.
This case has garnered significant attention in the local area, highlighting the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children and ensuring that offenders are held accountable for their actions. The community remains vigilant, and authorities continue to emphasize the importance of reporting any suspicious behavior to prevent such incidents in the future.
