WILLIAM MACKINNON FROM PLYMOUTH JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SHARING
In March 2021, a disturbing case unfolded involving William Mackinnon, a man with a military background, who was sentenced to prison for his involvement in the distribution of highly disturbing and illegal images depicting child abuse.Mackinnon, aged 53 and a resident of Sutherland Road in the Mutley area of Plymouth, was found guilty of multiple charges related to the possession and dissemination of indecent images of children, including some involving infants.
According to court proceedings at Plymouth Crown Court, Mackinnon engaged in the online sharing of dozens of graphic images that depicted toddlers and even a baby being subjected to sexual abuse by adults.
The severity of his actions was underscored by the presiding judge, Judge Robert Linford, who described Mackinnon's conduct as reaching “the very depths of depravity.” The judge emphasized that these images were not fabricated or digital creations but were real photographs of actual children being abused, highlighting the heinous nature of the crimes.
During the sentencing, Judge Linford condemned Mackinnon’s failure to take responsibility or to be honest with probation officers, despite the jury’s overwhelming verdicts against him.
The court heard that Mackinnon had pleaded not guilty to three counts of distributing indecent images and three counts of making such images.
However, after a trial earlier this year, a jury found him guilty on all charges.
The most serious of these charges involved the distribution of 64 Category A images, which are classified as the most severe due to their explicit content involving sexual abuse by adults.
These images were produced and shared between November 2017 and November 2018.
The judge sentenced Mackinnon to two and a half years in prison for this particular offence, with the other sentences to run concurrently.
Judge Linford made it clear that the circulation of such material fuels the production of further abuse, stating, “If people did not share such material online, then it would not be produced in the first place.” The court’s decision underscores the gravity of distributing child abuse images and the importance of holding offenders accountable to protect vulnerable children from further harm.
