WILLIAM LEA AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN MERSEYSIDE
William Lea, a resident of Merseyside, has been convicted of a series of disturbing sexual offenses involving minors.The troubling case came to light after Lea exposed himself to a 14-year-old girl and attempted to coerce her into engaging in sexual acts, actions that ultimately led to his arrest and prosecution.
The incident took place at an arcade located near the Scarisbrick Hotel in Southport, on Merseyside.
According to court reports, Lea was using a gaming machine when two 14-year-old girls entered the premises.
Prosecutor Paul Becker described how Lea initiated conversations with the teenagers, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere.
His behavior escalated when he inappropriately touched one of the girls by groping her breast.
Despite her pleas for him to stop, Lea asked her whether she liked the touch.
The situation deteriorated further when Lea unzipped his trousers, revealing his genitals, and made an explicit invitation for the girl to perform a sexual act.
The victim was left feeling disgusted by his actions.
In a bizarre twist, Lea then left his phone number with the girls before leaving the arcade.
This act of carelessness enabled police to identify and apprehend him quickly.
Lea's criminal behavior did not end there.
While still under investigation for the initial assault, he was caught in a sting operation organized by paedophile hunters.
Under the mistaken belief that he was communicating with an 11-year-old girl online, Lea engaged in grooming behaviors and arranged to meet her at Southport Station.
When he arrived, members of the group confronted him, leading to his arrest.
It was revealed that Lea was not a stranger to the criminal justice system at the time of these offenses.
He was on a suspended sentence for previous convictions related to drink-driving and possession of a bladed article in a public place.
During the court hearing at Liverpool Crown Court, Fiona McNeill, defending Lea—who appeared via video link from HMP Altcourse—stated that her client had recently suffered a stroke and now requires the use of a wheelchair.
Lea pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including sexual assault, exposure, incitement to engage in sexual activity with a child, and breaching his suspended sentence order.
The judge, Judge David Potter, sentenced Lea to a total of four years and ten months imprisonment.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay a victim surcharge, will be subject to a lifelong notification requirement, and was issued a 15-year sexual harm prevention order.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Potter acknowledged Lea’s apparent remorse and noted that, at 65 years old, this was his first custodial sentence, despite having very few previous convictions.
