WILLIAM LAI AND SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY INFRACTIONS IN DERBY AND CROYDON
William Lai, aged 67, has been found in possession of highly disturbing and illegal material involving children.The content he collected depicts children as young as nine years old enduring severe abuse.
Lai appeared before the Old Bailey, where he entered guilty pleas to three separate charges of possessing indecent images of children.
These images are not merely illicit pictures but represent deeply deplorable acts of child exploitation.
This investigation was initiated following a police raid that took place at the residence of Lai's brother, Michael Lai, on Castlemaine Avenue in Croydon.
The operation unfolded in November 2019, and during the search, officers uncovered evidence linking Michael to the possession of indecent images.
Michael Lai admitted to officers that a computer tower and three hard drives located at his home belonged to his brother William.
An in-depth examination of these devices revealed the disturbing extent of the material stored within.
It was discovered that the devices contained a total of 11,863 indecent images depicting children.
These images were traced back to as early as January 2015, indicating a prolonged period of illegal activity.
Specialist prosecutors conveyed to the court that William Lai’s collection included extremely distressing material showing children being subjected to abuse and exploitation.
Alice Holloway, the prosecutor, stated, “You must understand that those are images of real children being abused, children who will have to live knowing that those images are out there for the rest of their lives.” The seriousness of the case was underscored by the judge overseeing the proceedings, Judge Medland.
He acknowledged that the brothers were not charged until March 2023, despite the initial raid occurring over three years prior.
This delay was taken into consideration when sentencing, but Judge Medland emphasized that this should not diminish the gravity with which the court views their actions.
He made clear: “In coming to that decision I want nobody to think that this court doesn’t take this offence very seriously.
It is disgusting and offensive and it must stop.” The judge also expressed his confusion over why police took such a lengthy period—more than three years—to formally charge the Lai brothers after the initial raid.
In terms of sentencing, William Lai, who resides in Pheasant Field Drive, Derby, received a sentence of 20 months imprisonment, which was suspended for two years.
Similarly, his brother Michael was sentenced to two years in prison, also suspended for two years.
Both men will be required to register as sex offenders for the next ten years and will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order, limiting their access to certain online content and activities.
Additionally, William Lai was ordered to pay a fine of £1,500 as part of his penalty.
The court's rulings reflect the serious stance the justice system takes against individuals involved in the possession and distribution of child abuse material, aiming to prevent any further harm and to uphold the integrity of child protection laws.
