WILLIAM HOFTON FROM RUISLIP SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN CHURCH SCANDAL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Ruislip, William Hofton, a 49-year-old former priest and teacher, was sentenced to four years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against two young brothers. The crimes, which took place over a period of time, involved a gross abuse of trust by Hofton, who had initially gained the confidence and affection of the boys and their family through his role at the Sacred Heart Church in Ruislip.Hofton's actions came to light after the elder brother courageously came forward late last year to report the abuse. The Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court heard how Hofton, who was well-liked within the church community, used his position to manipulate and groom the boys. Prosecutor Peter Zinner described Hofton's behavior as a calculated abuse of trust, noting that he was perceived as a lively, friendly, and engaging figure by the congregation, which quickly warmed to him.
According to the court, Hofton showered the boys with gifts, took them on trips, and paid them a great deal of personal attention, possibly filling a void in their lives. The abuse of the older boy was particularly severe, occurring in various locations including the boy’s home, Hofton's church lodgings, during outings, and at least twice within the church premises itself. The court heard that Hofton repeatedly forced the older boy to perform sexual acts in his room, and the two boys were also subjected to showering together.
Furthermore, the court revealed that Hofton sexually harassed the younger brother as well, engaging in kissing and touching on his leg. Both boys, now adults leading successful lives, have been deeply affected by the trauma inflicted upon them. The elder brother continues to receive monthly counseling to cope with the emotional scars.
Judge Fabyan Evans, presiding over the case, addressed Hofton directly in sentencing. He emphasized the gravity of the betrayal, stating, “You were in a position of trust not only to your church but to the families of the boys entrusted to your care. You indulged in grooming which led to substantial and serious offences committed on one victim and could have led to far greater offending than in fact occurred on the other.”
William Hofton was sentenced to four years in prison, with the sentence to run concurrently on seven charges of indecent assault against the older boy, and 18 months concurrently on two counts of indecent assault against the younger. Additionally, he received a two-year concurrent sentence on seven charges of gross indecency involving the elder brother. As part of his sentence, Hofton will be required to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life, marking a lasting consequence of his criminal actions in Ruislip.
