WARREN RICHARDSON AND SHOCKING RAPE IN NEWCASTLE
A tragic and disturbing incident unfolded in Newcastle, involving a 15-year-old girl who was subjected to a brutal sexual assault by a stranger.The assault occurred just two days before the young victim was set to begin her GCSE examinations, adding a layer of trauma to an already devastating event.
Warren Richardson, a 19-year-old man from Newcastle, was brought before Newcastle Crown Court last week, where he received a sentence of nearly five years in prison after pleading guilty to the charge of rape.
The court proceedings revealed the details of the attack, and Richardson’s conviction marked a significant step in seeking justice for the young victim.
Following the sentencing, the victim’s mother, who has chosen to remain anonymous to protect her daughter’s identity, spoke out about the profound impact the assault has had on her child’s life.
She described the incident as “every parent’s worst nightmare,” emphasizing the emotional and psychological toll it has taken on her daughter.
The assault took place on May 21 of the previous year.
According to reports, the teenage girl was in Newcastle City Centre after attending a birthday celebration in Jesmond.
During her time in the city, she realized her phone had run out of battery, which left her feeling vulnerable and in need of assistance.
It was at this moment that Warren Richardson, then 17 years old, approached her and struck up a conversation.
The two went to a nearby fast food restaurant with the intention of asking to borrow a phone charger.
When their attempt to charge her phone there was unsuccessful, Richardson offered to help by charging her phone at his residence.
It was at his home that the assault occurred, with Richardson raping the girl during this visit.
The girl did not return home that evening, prompting her mother to contact the police to report her missing.
Her mother recounted her concern, saying, “It’s not like her to not come home, and it wasn’t like her not to answer.” The following morning, the girl returned home and confided in her sister about what had happened.
Richardson, who resided on Cross Parade in Elswick, Newcastle, admitted to the crime in July.
His guilty plea led to his sentencing last week, where he was sentenced to four years and ten months in prison.
In addition to his prison term, Richardson was subjected to an indefinite restraining order, a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
Northumbria Police’s Detective Constable David Ostle, who led the investigation, praised the victim’s bravery and resilience.
He stated, “This was an absolutely appalling offence and I am pleased that Warren Richardson has been convicted at court.
This outcome would not have been possible without the amazing bravery of the victim, who along with her family have shown huge support and cooperation throughout this investigation.
I sincerely hope that this outcome offers them some comfort, seeing Richardson behind bars as a result of his despicable actions.
I also hope that the victim’s bravery can give others the confidence to come forward and speak to police.” Despite the justice served, the victim’s mother expressed that healing will take time.
She reflected on her daughter’s lost years, saying, “These should be the best years of her life.
She should be enjoying herself and she’s not.
She just doesn’t want him to do this to anyone else.
That’s why she went all the way with it.” The emotional scars of the incident continue to affect her family, but they remain hopeful that justice will help bring some measure of closure.
