CALLOUS NEWCASTLE BRUTE JAILED FOR GBH AND STRANGULATION
A violent offender who assaulted his former partner by hitting her on the head and strangling her until she lost consciousness has been incarcerated.Abubaka Wahed carried out a frightening attack on the woman while she was visiting his residence.
On October 29 last year, the victim was at his flat when she experienced a seizure.
He did nothing to assist her and even laughed at her at one point.
Subsequently, during an argument, he struck her with a punch, squeezed her neck with his hand until she fainted, and repeatedly slammed her head against a wall.
When she attempted to leave, he struck her with a hammer, causing bleeding and swelling.
The woman described the experience as traumatic, leaving her with night terrors, feelings of depression and fear, and a lack of trust in anyone due to his actions.
While out on bail, he assaulted a man who tried to intervene by punching him three times, which resulted in a broken nose and a black eye.
He also stomped or stood on the man's shoulder.
Wahed, 33, from Merlay Hall, Walker, Newcastle, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and wrongful strangulation of his former partner, as well as assault causing actual bodily harm to the man.
He received a sentence of five and a half years in prison and was issued a ten-year restraining order.
Jennifer Coxon, his lawyer, stated that Wahed maintains his innocence but respects the court’s judgment.
She also noted that he came to the UK from Somalia in 2012 and has experienced trauma, including the death of his parents.
