VENKAT ANNAPUREDDY FLEEING FROM PRESTON TO INDIA AFTER PREDATORY ACTS AT BLACKBURN HOTEL
In March 2021, a disturbing case of child exploitation unfolded involving Venkat Annapureddy, a 25-year-old man who targeted a vulnerable 13-year-old girl. The incident took place in Blackburn, where Annapureddy, an IT student at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in Preston, had established an online relationship with the young girl.
Over time, their digital communication escalated, leading Annapureddy to arrange a meeting in person with the intent of engaging in sexual activity.
According to court proceedings, the predator planned to meet the girl at a hotel in Blackburn.
The hotel’s owner, however, became suspicious of the pair’s behavior.
Recognizing potential danger, the owner devised a plan to delay them while discreetly contacting the police.
This quick-thinking action was crucial in preventing further harm and ensuring police intervention.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Annapureddy had been in contact with the girl through Snapchat, where their conversations were highly sexualized.
The police recovered messages from their phones, which clearly demonstrated that the 25-year-old was aware of her age—she had explicitly told him she was only 13.
Despite this knowledge, Annapureddy continued to pursue her, showing a blatant disregard for her age and safety.
Initially, Annapureddy pleaded not guilty to charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and facilitating a child sexual offence.
He was granted bail and scheduled for trial at Crown Court.
However, in May 2020, he fled the country, returning to India, which meant he was tried and sentenced in his absence.
In his absence, the court sentenced Annapureddy to five years in prison at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.
The presiding judge, Recorder Mark Ainsworth, described the case as particularly serious, emphasizing the disturbing nature of the communication and the fact that Annapureddy was aware of the girl’s age but continued to pursue her.
The judge also highlighted the role of the hotel owner, whose vigilant actions prevented further harm.
The owner had asked for identification when Annapureddy attempted to rent a room, suspecting the girl looked younger than her stated age.
When the defendant tried to cancel the booking, the owner cleverly arranged for police to arrive, which they did within approximately ten minutes.
During arrest, Annapureddy apologized for his conduct, claiming he would not repeat his actions.
As part of his sentence, he was also subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, designed to restrict his future contact with minors and prevent any further offences.
The case underscores the importance of vigilance and swift action in protecting children from online predators and highlights the serious consequences faced by those who exploit minors, even when they flee justice by leaving the country.
