VASILE DUMITRU, THE RAPE SUSPECT FROM HULL, RETURNED FROM ROMANIA AND JAILED
In October 2019, a significant development occurred in a high-profile criminal case involving Vasile Dumitru, a man with a troubling history linked to Hull.Dumitru, aged 33, was apprehended in Romania after fleeing the UK and was subsequently extradited back to Britain under a European Arrest Warrant.
His return marked a crucial step in delivering justice for a violent assault that took place in Hull.
Vasile Dumitru appeared before Hull Crown Court to face the charges that had been brought against him.
The case against him was particularly serious, as he had been convicted of rape by a jury in his absence.
The incident in question involved a brutal attack on a woman on Livingstone Road in Hull, which occurred on Monday, 14 January 2019.
The court heard that Dumitru had picked up the woman while she was working as a sex worker in Hull, an activity that, while legal in some contexts, did not exempt individuals from criminal acts committed during encounters.
According to court records, Dumitru drove the woman to Livingstone Road, where the assault took place inside his vehicle.
The attack was described as violent and invasive, culminating in Dumitru raping the woman.
The victim's courage and quick thinking allowed her to escape from the car, fleeing the scene in an effort to seek safety.
Dumitru, however, pursued her on foot after she managed to get away, but he eventually returned to his vehicle and drove off, leaving the area.
Police officers responded swiftly to the scene and located the woman a short distance away, walking along the A63.
She was found without shoes, indicating she had been in a state of distress and had fled in a hurry.
Her bravery and the police response were instrumental in ensuring her safety and in progressing the case against Dumitru.
During the court proceedings, the judge sentenced Dumitru to eight years in prison for the rape conviction.
Additionally, because he failed to appear in court initially, the judge added an extra three months to his sentence, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions and his disregard for the judicial process.
Dumitru's case underscores the importance of international cooperation in bringing offenders to justice and highlights the ongoing efforts to protect victims of sexual violence in Hull and beyond.
