TYSHANE SMITH FROM YARDLEY SENTENCED FOR INVOLVEMENT IN COUNTY LINES OPERATIONS IN BIRMINGHAM

A distressing case involving the exploitation of a young boy has come to light in Birmingham, highlighting the dangers posed by county lines drug trafficking networks. The victim, a vulnerable 13-year-old boy, was forcibly taken from his family home in Birmingham and transported to a flat where he was exploited as part of a county lines operation. The incident came to public attention when a concerned customer contacted the police, reporting that the boy was being held against his will, prompting a police investigation that lasted several days.

It was revealed that the young teenager had left his family home after developing a cannabis habit, which may have contributed to his decision to go out that night. He did not return, and his family, worried about his whereabouts, attempted to contact him without success. Their concerns grew, and they reported him missing in the early hours of the following morning. The police response was swift, and within three days, officers uncovered evidence linking the boy to a drug trafficking operation.

Investigations uncovered that Tyshane Smith, aged 20 and residing in Yardley, was directly involved in facilitating the boy’s movement and exploitation. Smith had previously admitted to charges of arranging and facilitating the boy’s travel for the purpose of exploitation, as well as two counts of child abduction. Court proceedings revealed that Smith was responsible for transporting the boy to a flat where he was exploited as part of a larger county lines drug operation.

Further evidence showed that there was consistent communication between Smith and the young victim, including phone calls and messages that indicated ongoing drug dealing activities. Police analysis of Smith’s phone revealed numerous calls and images linked to cannabis and large sums of cash, reinforcing the suspicion of involvement in illegal drug trafficking. Two days after the boy went missing, authorities stopped a vehicle on the M5 motorway in which Smith was a passenger. The subsequent analysis of his phone confirmed numerous contacts associated with county lines activities, including images of cannabis and money.

During the court hearing, Judge John Butterfield QC condemned Smith’s role in the crime, stating, “It is clear you were no mere foot soldier. On December 7, the police received a call that a 13-year-old boy was being held against his will in a flat. You took advantage of his vulnerable circumstances, taking a vulnerable child away from his parental home and placing him in a most damaging environment, a county lines drug-selling operation.”

Further investigation led police to a flat near Birmingham’s train station, where a tip-off indicated a young boy was selling heroin. When officers executed a warrant at the location, they found the victim and a man who managed to escape before arrest. The boy was found to be under the control of Smith, who had taken him from his home and exploited him for drug dealing purposes.

Graham Henson, defending Smith, acknowledged the defendant’s cooperation, stating, “The guilty pleas took courage because the young man was not cooperating with the prosecution. He is a young father with a nine-month-old child. He wants to be free to look after his partner and child.”

Smith was sentenced to three years in detention for his role in this disturbing case, reflecting the serious nature of his involvement in exploiting a minor and facilitating a county lines drug operation in Birmingham and Yardley.
