JAIL FOR NORFOLK MAN WHO INTENTIONALLY STRANGLED PARTNER

A man convicted of choking his partner to the point she could not breathe has received a prison sentence in one of the ground-breaking cases under a newly introduced law.

At an early hour, 24-year-old Tyler Brown entered his partner’s bedroom and strangled her after they argued about his cocaine use.

In court, it was detailed that Brown removed jewelry and clothing during the assault, which took place following a music festival held at Earlham Park.

Brown appeared before Norwich Crown Court on a Friday to be sentenced after admitting the new charge of intentional strangulation, a legal measure introduced in June to combat domestic abuse.

He is among the first individuals to be convicted under this legislation.

His partner, who has since ended the relationship, had known Brown for around two years and they had been dating since March of that year.

Witnesses described Brown as sometimes aggressive and quick to become abusive, a behavior she linked to his cocaine consumption.

Prosecutor Martin Ivory told the court that on September 24, the couple attended the Tales in the Park festival, but she left early due to Brown discussing drugs.

Shortly after, at about 1 a.m.

on September 25, Brown called her and claimed he could show he was not intoxicated, then proceeded to physically assault her by placing his hands around her neck.

This was part of a series of violent incidents Brown inflicted on her over four months.

Earlier incidents included throwing a juice carton and a box of Cornetto ice creams that hit her face and caused bruising.

Brown, based in Little Dunham near Swaffham, also admitted to additional assaults, including a battery and actual bodily harm on September 8, as well as criminal damage involving a damaged television.

He received a sentence of two and a half years in prison from Judge Katharine Moore, who emphasized the gravity of his actions.

The judge stated that strangulation is among the most severe forms of domestic violence, capable of causing critical injury or death.

She described his behavior as a severe abuse of power that induces terror, asserting that it signifies that the victim’s life was under threat.

Judge Moore declared that such conduct poses a serious risk to future partners and stressed the importance of the new law in protecting victims.

Lynne Shirley, representing Brown, stated that her client expressed deep remorse and had accepted responsibility for his actions, noting that the choking lasted only seconds.

She pointed out his maturity relative to his age and explained that substance abuse was a contributing factor.

Following the case, Detective Constable David Mills, who led the investigation, praised the sentence, describing the attack as vicious.

He highlighted that the law had provided a new tool for prosecution and that strong evidence was key to securing a conviction, adding that Brown’s incarceration was justified given his clear intent to harm.
