TREVOR HOPCRAFT'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN HULL: DECADES OF ABUSE EXPOSED AND JUSTICE SERVED
After enduring a harrowing ordeal spanning over thirty years, a woman from Hull has finally found a measure of justice following the heinous crimes committed against her by Trevor Hopcraft, a man notorious for his predatory behavior.The victim, who was just a young girl at the time, endured a series of traumatic events that began when she was only four years old, and her story is one of pain, betrayal, and eventual relief.
Hopcraft, aged 50 and residing at 32nd Avenue in North Hull, was convicted of multiple counts of sexual assault and abuse, including three counts of rape and nine counts of indecent assault.
His crimes, which spanned over two decades, involved four young girls, with the earliest victim being a four-year-old girl whom he was babysitting.
The first victim, now in her 30s, came forward in May of the previous year to report the abuse, which had persisted for six years.
During the investigation, police uncovered evidence of three additional victims, revealing the full extent of Hopcraft’s predatory actions.
One of the most disturbing episodes involved Hopcraft threatening the young girl with a knife to her throat and holding her over the balcony of his fourth-floor flat in the Bransholme area of Hull.
She recounted her terrifying experience, saying, “He picked me up and hung me over the balcony.
I thought he was going to throw me over.
I remember seeing a skip below.
It felt like forever.
I was so scared.
I just kept shaking.
He wanted me to keep my mouth shut.
I wanted to tell somebody but I didn’t know what to do.” Earlier incidents included Hopcraft buying her silence with just 10p and attempting to abuse her on another occasion, which he narrowly avoided by threatening her with the same knife.
On other occasions, he stormed into her room unannounced and slapped her across the face without warning, further traumatizing the young girl.
The abuse did not stop with this victim.
Hopcraft also repeatedly assaulted a 13-year-old girl, whom he later impregnated.
When she confided in him about her pregnancy, he reacted with violent rage, throwing her down a flight of stairs, which caused her to miscarry.
She later reported him to the police but was too terrified to participate in a police interview at the time.
She described her feelings, saying, “When the police contacted me about Hopcraft last year, I just collapsed.
I had boxed it all away.
I had been given a chance to report it in the 1990s and I blew it.
It’s like I’ve been given a second chance.
I’m over the moon with the sentence.
Hopefully, now, I can put it to rest.
I just want to move on with my life.” Another victim, a five-year-old girl, was also targeted by Hopcraft while he was babysitting her.
In 1999, he assaulted a 14-year-old girl visiting his home, pretending to give her a massage before abusing her, and warning her that others would blame her if she told anyone.
Despite the overwhelming evidence and multiple victims, Hopcraft initially denied all allegations, telling police, “I didn’t do any of this.” Judge Mark Bury, presiding over the case at Hull Crown Court, sentenced Hopcraft to 20 years in prison, describing his actions as “heinous.” The judge emphasized Hopcraft’s lack of remorse, stating, “You have shown no remorse and no empathy and called them all liars.
You abused their parents’ trust.
You used them when the opportunity arose to satisfy your interest in underage girls.” In addition to his prison sentence, Hopcraft has been ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life.
His victims, scarred by his actions, expressed a mixture of relief and ongoing pain.
The woman who was first abused, still haunted by her memories, said, “For all these years, I’ve been called a liar.
I cannot forgive Hopcraft for what he has done.
I should have been strong enough to go forward with it myself.
Hopcraft has ruined my life.
I still have nightmares.” As Hopcraft begins his sentence, the community in Hull grapples with the revelations of his long history of abuse, and the victims continue their journey toward healing, knowing that justice has finally been served after decades of suffering.
