TONY STORER OF AIRDRIE CONVICTED FOR ANIMAL NEGLECT IN SCOTLAND

Anthony Storer, whose exact age is not specified and who resides on Douglas Street in Airdrie ML6 9JS, was convicted in 2019 after allowing his pet boxer to fall into such a severe state of neglect that veterinary intervention was impossible.

On April 1, 2019, Airdrie Sheriff Court found Storer guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. The dog, named Sasha, exhibited three small tumors, inflamed and overgrown gums, was severely underweight, and suffered from renal issues, dental disease, and hypothyroidism.

Storer, who co-owned Sasha with Caroline McLeish—who was given a separate sentence—failed to provide adequate care, resulting in the dog's condition worsening to the point where saving her was no longer viable.

In November 2018, McLeish, also from Douglas Street in Airdrie, received a three-year ban from keeping animals.

Scottish SPCA chief inspector John Chisholm commented on the case: “This charge was dealt with as Storer failed to provide adequate nutrition and veterinary treatment to Sasha, a female Boxer, who, upon vet examination, scored a body condition of 1/5 with ribs, spine, and pelvic bones clearly visible from a distance.

“Sasha had inflamed and overgrown gums with evidence of a chronic bacterial infection. Several of her lower incisor teeth were fractured and diseased, causing pain.

“There were three small tumors on various parts of her body, and veterinary assessment revealed renal compromise, dental disease, and hypothyroidism.

“Eventually, after battling various health issues, the decision was made to put Sasha to sleep.

“I’m pleased the courts have addressed this case; however, it underscores the need for tougher and more consistent sentencing. This level of neglect didn’t happen overnight and could have been easily prevented.”

Storer was fined £300 and received a two-year ban from owning dogs, which has since expired.
