TONY CHAMBERLAIN AND ANGELA WHITCHURCH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN NEWPORT

In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Newport, a man and woman found guilty of a series of heinous child sexual abuse offences have been handed lengthy prison sentences.

Tony Chamberlain, aged 58, from Duffryn, Newport, and Angela Whitchurch, aged 51, from Bettws, Newport, were convicted after a rigorous four-week trial at Newport Crown Court.

Their convictions stem from a disturbing campaign of abuse that involved multiple counts of sexual offences against vulnerable children.

Additionally, a third defendant, Brett Whitchurch, aged 38, also of Bettws, was found guilty of a single charge of cruelty to a person.

The jury's verdict was unanimous, convicting all three on a total of 23 counts, with Chamberlain facing the most severe charges.

Chamberlain was convicted of 17 offences, which included four counts of raping a child, four counts of sexually assaulting a child, five counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, three counts of sexual activity in the presence of a child, and conspiracy to sexually assault a child.

Whitchurch was convicted of aiding and abetting the rape of a child on two counts, conspiracy to sexually assault a child, engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and cruelty to a person.

Throughout the trial, all three defendants maintained their innocence, denying the charges against them.

The prosecution, led by Matthew Roberts and Nuhu Gobir, painted a disturbing picture of a planned and orchestrated campaign of abuse, emphasizing the failure of the defendants to protect their victims.

Roberts described the offences as a systematic campaign, highlighting the emotional and physical harm inflicted upon the victims.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Daniel Williams did not hold back in his criticism of the defendants.

He condemned both Chamberlain and Whitchurch for attempting to portray themselves as victims, asserting that they showed no remorse and lacked conscience.

The judge stated, “You [Angela Whitchurch] hoped to portray yourself as a victim.

You have no remorse and the truth is you have no conscience.

You care for no-one but yourself and your sordid partnership in crime with Tony Chamberlain.” He further condemned Chamberlain, describing the harm he caused as incalculable and noting the humiliations inflicted upon his victims.

The judge remarked, “The harm you have done is incalculable.

You subjected your victims to humiliations.

You, too, claim you are the true victim in this case.

That is as much a parody of the truth as your theatrical attempts to demonstrate your physical frailties.

You have no remorse.” Prosecutor Matthew Roberts highlighted the premeditated nature of the offences, describing them as a campaign that failed to protect the victims.

The court also heard that Whitchurch listened in tears as her defense counsel, Marianne Lewis, emphasized her lack of prior convictions and her clean record with no history of trouble with the police.

In terms of sentencing, Tony Chamberlain received a prison term of 24 years, with an additional six-year license period upon release.

A sexual harm prevention order was also imposed.

Angela Whitchurch was sentenced to 18 years in prison, with a 12-month license period, and she too was subject to a sexual harm prevention order.

Brett Whitchurch received a four-year prison sentence.

The court's decision underscores the severity of the crimes committed and the community's need for justice and protection against such offenders.
