MAN CRIES AS HE IS SENTENCED FOR CONTROLLING WIFE'S LIFE
A jealous husband walked weeping from the dock when jailed for controlling his wife's life and demanding cash to leave her.The court heard Rewers, 39, made 50 calls to his wife when she went to church and later said "she didn't deserve to be alive," Nottingham Crown Court heard.
She finally alerted police officers when he came home with two bottles of vodka.
The couple, who were married for eight years, are now getting a divorce.
Things turned bad after Rewers started drinking heavily following the setup of a car trading company.
He returned to Poland for treatment and was given an implant to help with his alcohol abuse.
Despite this, his controlling behaviour persisted.
He was described as showing extreme jealousy, isolating his wife, and not allowing her to wear make-up.
On one occasion, Rewers grabbed her jaw and shouted: "You don't deserve to be alive." He denied assault and controlling behaviour but was found guilty by magistrates.
He received a 15-month prison sentence, which was imposed at the crown court.
The judge noted his past aggressive behaviour and lack of remorse, suggesting he may not accept the divorce.
The court also heard that Rewers's behaviour has caused his wife to lose confidence and become more isolated.
Richard Gibbs, mitigating, said Rewers had been in custody awaiting sentence and had addressed his alcohol issues, noting that his behaviour has been influenced by his struggles with alcohol and depression.
