TOMASZ KOWALKOWSKI SENTENCED IN NOTTINGHAM FOR ABUSING 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL AFTER FLEEING TO SICILY
In a disturbing case that spanned several years, Tomasz Kowalkowski, a 46-year-old man from Nottingham, was convicted of heinous sexual offenses involving a vulnerable 13-year-old girl. The crimes took place at various times between 2016 and 2019 within Nottinghamshire, highlighting a prolonged period of abuse that shocked the local community.
Following the allegations, Kowalkowski fled the United Kingdom, escaping to the Mediterranean island of Sicily in an apparent attempt to evade justice.
His departure came after he was accused of multiple sexual offenses against the young girl, which prompted a significant police investigation.
The authorities in Nottinghamshire acted swiftly, questioning him in July 2019, and after a comprehensive investigation, he was formally charged with numerous offenses related to the abuse.
Despite the charges, Kowalkowski failed to appear at his initial court hearing scheduled for November 2020.
This absence led to the issuance of a warrant for his arrest.
Nottinghamshire Police, working with international law enforcement agencies, launched a dedicated manhunt to locate him.
Through meticulous review of flight records, investigators discovered that he had left the UK on a flight to Palermo, Sicily, the month prior to his disappearance.
However, his exact whereabouts remained unknown for some time.
It was only after international cooperation and liaison with Italian authorities that Kowalkowski was eventually traced to a town in southern Sicily.
The investigation revealed that he had been using the same bank machine repeatedly to withdraw money, which provided crucial evidence for his location.
Recognizing the urgency, detectives worked tirelessly to compile a comprehensive, court-ready case against him, aiming to arrest him before he could move again.
In September 2021, Italian police apprehended Kowalkowski as he was using the same cash machine.
He was extradited back to the UK two weeks later and remanded in custody to await trial.
His return marked a significant breakthrough in the case, allowing the legal proceedings to proceed.
During a seven-day trial at Nottingham Crown Court, Kowalkowski maintained his innocence, claiming that his victim was fabricating the allegations.
He also asserted that his trip to Sicily was solely to care for a sick relative, attempting to justify his presence on the island.
However, the evidence presented by Nottinghamshire Police was overwhelming.
On 24 March 2022, a jury found Kowalkowski guilty of multiple serious charges, including one count of raping a girl under 13, three counts of sexual assault by touching, three counts of engaging in sexual activity with a girl aged 13-15, and one count of inciting a girl aged 13-15 to engage in sexual activity.
The conviction highlighted the severity and brutality of his actions.
Following his conviction, Kowalkowski was sentenced on 20 May 2022 at Nottingham Crown Court to a total of 18 years in prison.
In addition to his custodial sentence, he was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the public from further harm.
