TOBIAS YATES AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX ABUSE AT CHELLASTON ACADEMY IN DERBY
A disturbing case of sexual abuse has emerged involving Tobias Yates, a former mathematics teacher at Chellaston Academy in Derby, who manipulated and controlled two young female pupils through an extensive and horrifying campaign of grooming and assault.Over an eight-year period, Yates engaged in a series of depraved acts that left lasting scars on his victims, who demonstrated remarkable bravery by confronting their abuser in court.
Tobias Yates, a 31-year-old man from Stenson Fields, appeared at Derby Crown Court to face charges related to his criminal behavior.
During the proceedings, both of his victims shared emotionally charged statements describing the profound impact his actions had on their lives.
One girl recounted her feelings of betrayal and being left emotionally shattered, while the other expressed her devastation, stating, "I truly believed he loved me and it was okay, but it was not okay as I was a child and he was a paedophile." The court detailed the extent of Yates’s depravity.
It emerged that he had secretly filmed sexual encounters with one of the girls, exchanged hundreds of thousands of messages—specifically around 250,000—with one of the victims—and coerced them into sending explicit photographs.
Disturbingly, these included images of one girl dressed in her school uniform.
Yates kept sex toys in his desk drawer at the school and was caught touching one of the girls sexually during lessons, while a trainee teacher was instructing other students in the same classroom.
Further evidence revealed that Yates would pick up one of the victims from her home, forcing her to hide in the footwell of his car to avoid being seen before driving her to his residence for sexual activity.
He also supplied one girl with undergarments designed for much younger children, featuring cartoon characters, further indicating his obsessive and perverse fixation.
Additionally, he manipulated one of the girls into calling him "Daddy" and "Sir" to satisfy his warped fetishes.
Throughout the trial, Yates showed no remorse.
When brought into the dock from custody, he maintained a stern expression, staring forward instead of acknowledging the impact of his crimes.
Victims and their families, who sat observing closely from the courtroom’s packed public gallery, were visibly affected.
One of the victims, summing up her suffering, said in her impact statement: "I have lost my carefree childhood.
It started in the classroom, a place where I should have been safe.
I truly believed he loved me and it was okay.
But it was not okay because I was a child and he was a paedophile." The second girl, also giving her statement, described feeling utterly betrayed and broken.
She recounted losing two stone in weight, suffering from nightmares that deprived her of sleep, and developing a negative view of herself.
She reflected on how her traumatic experience happened during her GCSE exams and wondered how her results might have differed had she been able to focus on her studies rather than being consumed by her abuser.
Justice was served as Yates was sentenced to a total of ten years and six months in prison.
Judge Robert Egbuna condemned his actions as manipulative and depraved, emphasizing that Yates had preyed on vulnerable young girls during their most impressionable years.
The judge explained that Yates had exploited their trust, manipulated their insecurities, and falsely made them feel responsible for his conduct.
He noted that Yates, an astute man, used his knowledge and grooming tactics to abuse his power, leaving the victims feeling responsible for the abuse.
Prosecutor Jonathan Straw outlined how the allegations first surfaced after the police became aware of Yates’s conduct while he was employed at Chellaston Academy.
Following public attention, the second victim was prompted to come forward and reveal her own harrowing experiences.
Straw described the case as a prolonged campaign of grooming, manipulation, and control, where Yates took advantage of the vulnerability of adolescent girls, gradually controlling their lives for his sexual gratification.
Yates had previously pleaded guilty during an earlier hearing to multiple charges, including engaging in sexual activity with a girl aged 13 to 15, performing sexual acts with a girl aged 13 to 17 while abusing a position of trust, and inciting sexual activity.
He also admitted to possessing extreme pornographic images and making indecent images of children, including two class A images and 83 class C images.
In mitigation, James Varley acknowledged that Yates had abused the trust of two young girls and expressed remorse.
A letter submitted to the court saw Yates apologize, acknowledging the damage caused and asserting that he would not reoffend.
Despite the disturbing nature of the case, the court emphasized the importance of safeguarding and protecting students.
The school issued a statement condemning Yates’s actions, reaffirming their commitment to student safety.
They stated that Chellaston Academy continues to work closely with authorities to ensure their safeguarding protocols are robust.
As part of his sentence, Yates was also issued a sexual harm prevention order and was registered as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing supervision and restrictions.
