TIMOTHY NEWBERRY SENTENCED IN ROTHERHAM FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES
A 33-year-old man named Timothy Newberry, hailing from Rotherham, was visibly overwhelmed with emotion as he appeared in Sheffield Crown Court to face charges related to serious sexual offences involving a minor.During the proceedings, Newberry was seen sobbing from the dock, clearly distressed as he was sentenced to serve his first prison term.
A security guard positioned beside him had to wait patiently to escort him out of the courtroom, as Newberry struggled to compose himself.
The judge, Graham Reeds KC, emphasized the gravity of the case, stating that the nature of Newberry’s offences was so severe that only a custodial sentence could be justified.
On May 20, 2024, a hearing revealed disturbing details about Newberry’s online conduct.
It was established that he engaged in highly inappropriate and explicit sexual communication with an online profile that claimed to be a 12-year-old girl named Sophie.
However, this profile was actually an undercover police officer operating as a decoy.
Prosecutor Joseph Bell outlined how the communication began in June 2023 via a social media messaging application.
From the outset, Sophie’s profile explicitly stated her age as 12 and mentioned her attendance at school, making her a vulnerable minor.
According to Mr.
Bell, Newberry’s interactions quickly turned sinister.
After a brief exchange about Sophie’s online profile, Newberry began attempting to solicit explicit images from her.
The prosecutor detailed how Newberry’s messages rapidly escalated, with him sending images of his genitals to the decoy.
Despite the initial contact, Newberry persisted in trying to obtain explicit videos from Sophie, repeatedly requesting such material.
At one point, he even sent a video of himself engaging in a solo sexual act, further demonstrating his intent.
Following these exchanges, Newberry continued to attempt contact with the decoy account over the subsequent days, but he received no responses.
The police intervened when they arrested him at his home address in Reresby Park Close, Dalton, Rotherham.
During police interviews, Newberry chose to answer questions with a silence of 'no comment.' He was formally charged and subsequently pleaded guilty to two counts: one of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and another of attempting to incite a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity, including penetration.
His legal representative, Clarkson Baptiste, brought to the court’s attention a pre-sentence report that highlighted Newberry’s troubled background.
The report detailed a difficult childhood, noting that he was unable to be cared for by his mother and was placed with his grandparents, who eventually made him homeless at the age of 16.
Mr.
Baptiste explained that Newberry has struggled throughout his adult life to find stability.
He also mentioned that Newberry attended court with his current partner, who was present in the public gallery, fully aware of the charges and the reasons for his appearance.
The barrister emphasized that Newberry was aware of the potential sentence he faced.
In sentencing, Judge Graham Reeds KC sentenced Newberry to 42 months in prison.
The judge underscored the seriousness of the offences, stating, “Police officers work to detect people like you who intend to corrupt children into sexual activity for their own sexual gratification.” He further remarked that, although no actual harm was caused to a real child, the potential harm and the intent behind Newberry’s actions were significant.
Additionally, the judge imposed a sexual harm prevention order on Newberry and mandated that he register as a sex offender.
Both measures are to be enforced indefinitely, reflecting the ongoing concern for public safety and the protection of minors from similar threats.
