CATHOLIC FRIAR TIMOTHY GARDNER FROM LONDON SENTENCED FOR POSSESSING THOUSANDS OF CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In March 2014, Timothy Gardner, a Catholic friar based in London, was sentenced after admitting to possession and distribution of a vast collection of indecent images of children. Gardner, aged 42 and residing in Sutton, was found with over 500 pictures of children and more than 5,000 prohibited images on his computer in August of the previous year. He pleaded guilty to 10 counts of making indecent images of children.

Gardner had served as a religious education teacher at Maria Fidelis Catholic School in Euston and was also associated with St Dominic’s Priory in Gospel Oak. Following his admission to the charges during a hearing earlier that month, he received a sentence of eight months in prison, suspended for two years, at Southwark Crown Court. Additionally, he was issued with a five-year sexual offences prevention order and will remain on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Keith Braithwaite from the Met’s Paedophile Unit stated, “Every indecent image accessed by Timothy Gardner was a real child, a vulnerable victim of crime. His selfish and abhorrent actions have contributed significantly to the destruction of these vulnerable victims’ childhoods. The MPS Paedophile Unit is committed to identifying and bringing to justice those who possess and distribute such images.”

Separately, reports surfaced that Gardner, a senior figure in Catholic education, taught at a school in Camden before being identified for possessing these images. The authorities reassured parents that Gardner’s misconduct did not involve any students at Maria Fidelis School, and the images did not feature individuals from Camden. The police investigation was initiated after various images were uncovered during a search of Gardner’s home in August.

His defense lawyer, Louise Sweet, highlighted Gardner’s previously good character but noted that further reports would examine any potential alcohol issues.

Camden Council responded by launching a safeguarding investigation to confirm that no wrongdoing occurred during his employment in Camden. They confirmed Gardner had undergone a full criminal record check, with no concerns raised regarding his behavior during his tenure at Maria Fidelis. It was also clarified that the images did not involve any individuals from Camden.

At the time of his arrest, Gardner was working full-time with the Catholic Education Service (CES), which collaborates closely with Catholic schools nationwide and advocates for religious education. The CES chairman, the Right Rev Malcolm McMahon, expressed regret over Gardner’s actions, stating, “I and the staff of the CES are deeply upset and troubled at the news of these internet offences by Fr Gardner. Working with statutory agencies, the church will continue to do all it can to ensure the safety of all vulnerable people.”

Bishop Sherrington, chair of the Westminster Diocesan Education Commission, also extended support, saying, “I endorse Bishop McMahon’s statement and offer prayers and support to those pupils and staff who trusted Fr Gardner and are shocked by his actions.”

Gardner’s sentencing was scheduled for March 31.

In a related case, Gardner, formerly a governor at Rye St Antony, a private girls’ school in Headington, faced additional legal proceedings. As of the previous day, he was admitted to possessing over 5,000 child abuse images and pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court. Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith ordered a review before sentencing and granted Gardner bail on the condition he avoids contact with anyone under 18 unless supervised.
